Quick confirmation please. Accidentally snapped the plastic handle of the dipstick and can't get it out of the tube, tried everything.. It's about 2cm down the tube and nothing to grab on, tried suction on it etc. still has part of plastic and washer on it. anyway my son needs the car tomorrow for work and I am going in holiday. So is it ok to run it for a couple of weeks as it is? My thoughts even if drops down further will only touch the pan and not go anywhere. Have taped the top up with speed tape to stop any ingress. Drove it for 20 miles and didn't move. I will take the tube off in 2 weeks and swap. I think it will be fine, but could do with some opinions please. E class c207 coupe 2011 and 250cdi

Hi do have anything with a magnetic on it that can slide down onto the dipstick

yea tried that not enough metal to catch it - tried to screw and drill but pushes it down - tried a bolt with some glue on will not grip - so it a tube off. I just cant do for 2 week s- i think will be fine - whats yr thoughts thanks

Was the oil level OK prior?

If so, and it isn't leaking oil with the engine running it should be fine.

Never dealt with this myself, but your fix looks solid. Should be okay for a couple weeks – just avoid flooring the gas pedal or sudden acceleration.

Depends on the engine but often the dipstick tube is pushed through a rubber grommet in the engine block and held in with one bolt on a bracket. Undoing this bolt will possibly allow you to wiggle the metal tube upwards exposing the dipstick which you can then (hopefully) get to with long nose pliers and push it up.

On this M113 V8 you can see (top right) the only bracket that holds the tube in , removing the bolt has the tube come loose , it wont come out on this particular engine but on yours it just might give you enough wiggle room.

Ignore the red circle on the photo , thats the CPS.

Long self taping screw and a blow torch is whats required.

Heat up the end of the screw and melt it into the plastic part at the top of the dipstick and pull it out.
