I am thinking it may be time to dispose of my January 1990 300TE-24. Obviously it is worth nothing in part ex assuming I could even get someone to take it.

So, advice please.

The car shows all the usual signs of its age and mileage (250k). A few small rust spots, paintwork on bonnet and offside front wing is shabby, usual worn patch/hole on driver's seat lumbar support, MOT expires March and nearside headlamp needs replacing after someone hit it. They're the bad bits.

Now for the good. It has five original alloys, full mushroom leather interior, electric seats, orthapaedic driver's seat, original Becker Le Mans radio cassette, boot cover and net, a fibreglass boot liner and original MB overmats including boot (these are in good condition except for driver's).

The car has not let me down in two years of ownership but it is now in need of a bit of tlc and I do not have the time or space to look after it.

So, what should I do to obtain the best (least worst) price?

Would it be best to try to sell it as a complete car or split it down for spares. Is ebay the best selling medium or should I advertise it privately first?

And crucially how much do you realistically think I can ask/achieve?

personally, i'd stick it on ebay complete as a running car. clean it up, get some good pics and you'll easily get £500+

if you want to break it you could probably get double that in parts alone but you'd have to be prepared to have a scrapper on the driveway and then possibly dispose of the carcas.

Id either spend a weekend stripping the best bits off to stick in the garage for later selling and then get rid of the shell. MInd you if you break it, and the numbers match, Id be interested in the EZL unit!

Cheers

If it has vanity mirrors I would be interested in those if you break it.

I may be interested in the whole car, depending on how bad the rust is and if a new MOT would be part of the deal. If youreally don;t want to spend any time on it then stick it on eBay and see what happens, I think you'd get less than £500 that way.

You may be pleasantly surprised at what it may fetch on ebay.

A colleague advertised his Peugeot 205 with a long list of faults including a broken water pump, hoping someone would give him scrap value or even just take it away. He ended up getting over £400, even after asking the buyer was he sure and had he read the fault list.

a decent advert with lots of pics would easily fetch atleast £500 on ebay......

stick it on there with no reserve and then when people phone you ask them to make an offer..... you may get much more than you think.

if its got an mot then just clean it really well and it will sell. i recently sold my E300D saloon.... i got £1100.

its all in the advert and the viewing....

I Agree,

I well wrote adverts LOTS of pictures and clean / hover the car.

You may be suprised !!

you could use my E300D auction as a template - i think its pretty good. This is the sort of thing i think you need to do to get a good price.

Claybar and wax the car and clean the interior aswell to get it looking the best it can.

dont be negative in the advert - i see lots of adverts listing the bad bits about a car but hardly mention the good bits, even though there are bound to be, even if its just spec etc.

I think either selling it for parts or as a whole unit on ebay is the best idea.

Apologies for not acknowledging your answers earlier but I have been without access to t'internet. Feels like having your arm cut off:rolleyes: .

Thanks all for the feedback.

Initial decision is to get the headlight replaced and give the car a good clean so I can asses it properly. I shall probably have the car gone over by my garage to determine any impending faults. If I sell it as a runner I would like to be as honest as possible with any prospective purchaser.

I shall miss this car but I just feel I haven't the time to look after it as I should.

The search is on for a newer one.;)

Time to resurrect this thread.

Unable to decide what to do I laid the car up on 28 Feb as tax and MOT expired then. I've decided to put it back on the road so bought a headlamp on ebay for £35 +p&p fitted it and yesterday took it for the MOT.

Both headlamps needed aligning and the offside windscreen washer needed unblocking.

Now has a year's MOT at cost of:- Labour £12.34 Fee £45.00, and headlamp £40

£97.34 well spent I would say:bannana::bannana::bannana::bannana:
