Do I need to update my Windows 10?

I've started receiving messages from Microsoft telling me I need to update to a newer version of Windows 10 for my computer to stay protected. I'm still receiving automatic updates, so is this just a marketing ploy to flog me features I don't need, or do I actually need to do something?

AFAIK, Win 10 will be supported 'til 2025. Unless MS have changed their mind recently and brought that forwards.

I have 21H1. It does all I need and more; does anyone know whether I will improve the security of my computer (all I would want, if there's something better out there) by installing 22H2?

Support by MS for 21H1 drops next month, which means no more security patches, so your machine will become less and less secure over time as it gets more and more out of date.

You need to update it now and ideally to 22H2...

By updating, you will inherently improve the security because you will still be able to update it to the latest security patches.

Depending on which edition of Windows 10 you have, support will end either on 05/24 or 10/25.

By then, you need to upgrade to Windows 11 but only machines from around roughly 3 years ago can be upgraded (you need at least an 8th generation Intel CPU or newer).

If you go into the updates section, make sure there is nothing pending at all in there (including Optional Updates).

It should also tell you in there if your machine is or is not compatible with Windows 11.

Feature Updates don't have a priority so are usually separately installed (you should see a separate section in there for the latest Feature Update e.g. 22H2).

I think it might come through eventually but it's better to be proactive on it sooner.

My laptop did a windows update in then last 24 hrs and is now on version 22H2 but remains on Windows 10 due to not being up to spec for Windows 11.

If you go to start-settings-window update it should tell you there if your pc is up to windows 11 spec or not. I assume if it is up to spec it will just update to the newer OS.

Stop Press: I've been blundering around on the net, and reading many technical terms and acronyms that I do not understand, but I gather it will be OK, though I may need more RAM. I installed some on my first Dell, but that was a big old thing with lots of space, and the Lenovo is minute by comparison.

We use Norton antivirus supplied free by our internet provider but I’m never entirely clear it’s doing what it should be doing.

Do other Window 10 users have antivirus programs such as Norton, or McAfee, or do you use the Security package contained within Windows 10? Thank you.

My Win 10 desktop isn't suitable to run Win 11.
I downloaded update 22H2 last night and today my PC is working as normal with Win 10.

The update took so long I left it overnight to finish and it still took another 30 mins of restarting before it was totally updated.

Presumably, since mine is Windows 11 capable, Microsoft won't sell me 22H2 for Windows 10, and all I can get is an upgrade to 22H2 and Windows 11. Anybody know how much the blighters will charge me, or have they already moved on to a monthly subscription?

McAfee was provided by our internet provider for many years but then dropped in favour of Norton which I find a little confusing.
I just did a quick google search and Windows security gets mixed views. Most seem to think it’s a reasonable antivirus but with some limitations.
Final comment I noted was ‘you don’t need third party antivirus, but you might want to’.

I can hardly see any improvement with 22h2 win11. Ran it on the gaming MSI laptop, desktop, and 2 surfaces. Matter of fact I'm getting lower fps on halo. There are unnecessarily lags, apps don't open as swiftly as they did on 21.
