Hi

Nephew was screwing at his Nissan 200SX and made the comment to me that it didnt have any 13mm headed nuts or bolts. He said it was well known that neither Toyota or Nissan dont have this size because of superstition.

Is this true or is he talking rubbish??

I only ever had one Toyota, a 1986 Corolla GT Coupe (sob sob) and dont remember it not having 13mm but then again it never needed worked on:bannana:

13mm is the DIN standard hex size for M8 metric fittings. I doubt Nissan, Toyota, or anyone else for that matter would specify non-standard fittings just because of superstition.. maybe JIS (japanese equivalent of DIN) is different?

Cheers,

AFAIK only 4 and 9 are considered unlucky in Japan.

I have worked on a few jap cars and the favourite spanners are 12 and 14mm, mates landcruiser has 12 and 14 everywhere i serviced a couple of isuzi trucks last week also 12 and 14 bolts.

Plus for some reason the bolts always seem to have a philiphs crosshead cut into the bolt head:p

I have 3 Hondas and they dont have a single 13mm bolt/nut head on them

10,12, 14, 17, 19 mm spanners and Sockets (+ 32mm hub nut) will almost completle dismantle most Hondas.

Get that young man further out into the world. His current circles are too small.
The don't use 13mm because it's ½", and that would have made things far too convenient for all the sorry sods who picked "mechanic" as a source of livelihood.

Until GM chose so wisely to use it as the size of their distributor hold-down bolt head in the late seventies, you couldn't buy a 16mm wrench. Thanks, GM.

Meanwhile, the Comanche helicopter engine had a field-service tookit comprising six tools. I've never grasped why a simple car should need more tools than a helicopter to work on.

O well. Could be Whitworth.
