I see that from May 20th if your diesel car shows ANY smoke its an instant MOT failure, If the DPF is missing or has 'signs of being tampered with' the same . Instant MOT failure.

There will also be two categories called 'Major fault' and 'Dangerous fault' the latter will not only fail the MOT you will not be able to drive the car away even if you have time left on the old MOT you drove in on.

It's up to the tester to decided the difference between 'Major' and 'Dangerous' . Unless the fault is blindingly obvious as dangerous, I can see lot's of heated debate in the MOT centre in the near future !

So maybe booking a PRE MOT check and not an actual MOT might be the way to go if you have any doubts about your car, if something is spotted you will (I assume) be allowed to drive away as you had not booked an actual MOT.

That'll be most of the buses and taxis off the road then.:)

I thought this is what most people do anyway isn’t it?

you can drive away , the mot tester has no officialdom to stop you. but if your stopped by plod its an upto £1000 fine.

So you can’t drive away really? ;)

Why would you? Your car should be roadworthy every day of the year and thus capable of passing an MOT the day before you have the big annual service.

Huh? Why would you have a pre-mot inspection?

So you can find any issues with your car and put them right prior to having the test. At your leisure. Makes sense to me?

Pre MOT is the way to go if you are in doubt about passing the real MOT.
I thought the rule about if it fails you don't have a valid MOT regardless if the old MOT has any time left was in place now and has been for a while. This started when it all became electronic and online for all to see as a new test replaces any existing one regardless of outcome.
Mind I can see all the modified cars running no DPF, gutted cats, race exhausts, etc will soon be a thing of the past as rules become more strict.
You can see it now..............telephone rings, you answer it, hello do you own a diesel car that has been sold to you without a DPF?
Yes!
Oh ok our company can make a claim against the selling dealer.
The new PPI has arrived!

I think if you did and the car was failed due to a 'dangerous' reason, the MOT tester would (I presume) be obliged to call the police stating that an unsafe vehicle has just been driven away from an authorised MOT centre in an unsafe condition and without a valid MOT.

So you spend, say, £250 having a pre MOT check and it fails...you'd be pissed.

I put my car through the MOT and if it fails I fix that one thing for £16.50 plus the cost of the repair...I bet it would be less than the cost of the pre MOT inspection.

The obvious things like lamps, horn etc you do yourself just before the time allotted...the rest should be ok assuming the car was serviced when required.

We have had this discussion before on here involving the removal of secondary cats. The MOT tester can fail the car for just about ANY tampering with the original exhaust system even if it passes the emission test. It's just that most don't. BUT if they are forced by the threat of fines or losing their test certificate they will fail you in a heartbeat if they suspect your exhaust is suspect.

I pay nothing for my pre-mot inspection?

As above. - I've never had a pre-MOT inspection; I just take it in, and if it fails it fails. Sometimes I know a car is going to fail, but I want to see what else is wrong before I fix it.

If they tell me it's dangerous, I'll ask for a price to fix it. If it just fails I'll fix it and bring it back. - I've had the local garage tell me it's failed, hand me the keys, and say "you can fix that yourself".

If it has failed for a 'dangerous' You won't be able (legally) to take it away after the 20th of May, fix it and bring it back, unless towed or on a low loader. That's the whole point of the new rule.

As I said a few weeks ago this new test requires people to change the way they approach the MOT,you need to be there none of this leave it and pick it up lark,if you are in any doubt about smoke, then get the car low on diesel and then put in a big dose of engine cleaner in a quiet area then rev it in a low gear clearing out all the crap, then fill up with diesel at the MOT station make certain that you rev the car at around 3000 revs for a couple of minutes this will heat up the exhaust gasses and should help to pass the emissions test,if you have removed the DPF then that is likely to be a fail no matter what.

There will be issues with dedicated MOT stations that don't do repair work. If you get a major fail you will have to hire a recovery flatbed to take the car home or to a garage.
