E class advice please!! And hello :-)

Hello, I have just joined the MB forum as I'm needing some good, impartial car advice!!

Today (26/12/12) I test drove an E280 CDI Sport on an 07 plate. 23k with pan roof, leather, heated seats and partial electric seats etc. is 14995, but managed to get the guy to 14400 - in a nice unusual red colour, do we hink that's a good deal?

Also, would you recommend an E280 or E320 (both CDI), and what options should I look for? This one I saw has the pan roof, which i like, but no COMAND? Also, parkfronic was visual only (and not working)....

Hello Forbes - welcome.

There's loads around so you can be choosy.

I'd want a 320 so I didn't keep wondering what I was missing, but that's a personal view.

By 2007/8 COMAND should be version 2.5 which is much better than earlier ones.
I wouldn't touch one without COMAND as it will be harder to sell later.
It will look like this if it's 2.5, with the card slot at the top and a green/red telephone button.

The options I always looked out for buying the six W211's I owned was;

1. COMAND
2. Heated seats
3. Memory seats
4. Parking sensors

Panoramic roof on a facelift silver W211 Sport is one of my favourite looking cars.

The 280 is a good choice, but the 320 driven at the same speeds uses the same amount of fuel but has more overtaking potential. I've driven both, the 280 never feels quick but will cruise at 140+ and is very refined, the 320 has more of a kick to it and is noticably quicker.

As for options - my E270 was very basic, I put an aftermarket audio system in anyway and kept it for a lot of miles. Heated seats are a good find, Airmatic is another.

Hi, to everyone that has replied already - thank you so much! I have never been on a car forum, so that's fantastic!

Thanks in particular for the picture of COMAND 2.5 - It definitely doesn't have that! I've had another look at it, it is the Sport model, and has Black leather, greeny/grey (?) wood trim, cruise, climate, xenons, heated seats, half electric seats, pan roof. It is bright red, and looks really cool as I've never seen one that colour!

A few people are saying to go with the 320 CDI rather than the 280 CDI - What kind of mileage to you get with either/ both? I've been surfing the MB forum for ages and some are saying 25, some are saying 50! More help haha!

All your cars look fab... the one I'm looking at is in Phoenix Cars Stirling if any of you are 'bored enough' to have a nosey!

I've had a look at the red E280 and I think besides the low mileage, it's not got a great deal going for it in my opinion.

No COMAND, it's quite low-spec and it's in a colour that will be very hard to sell on when the time comes.

The 5 series is a cracker with the 3litre engine
The 3.5 tt is even better!

I have the 320cdi, my friend Shaun has the 535d. Firstly the 535d is a 3 litre not a 3.5, and it's noticeably louder than the Mercedes engine, but it is significantly quicker and more efficient.

Hello, again! Yet again, can I say thank you so much for all the information you are sharing!

To ALF - I have been looking at 5's for some time, and more recently, the MB... However, I have eventually decided the MB E Class is the way to go... My mate had a 525d and the gearbox went ping (and that seriously put me off!!!)

To SPX - Thanks for having a look thats good of you... you say the car is quite low spec... so, aside from the 'missing' COMAND that we identified, what other spec should I be looking for - TBH I am a bit of a freak and LOVE cars that are specced up... I thought it was quite good spec wise but as an MB expert you guess not? What is it 'missing'?

I echo SPX's preferred options, (he knows his stuff) plus Keyless if you can.

Mine gives you an idea of what's available (click on the link at the bottom of my page) however, there's even more stuff out there - TV, comfort seats, pano roof etc.

Getting them all together within budget is the problem - but seek and ye shall find.

A Sport is generally the best spec to start with.

Thanks Developer that's dead helpful... your car looks awesome!! I've been looking on eBay and Autotrader, any other Mercedes Benz secret places I should be looking? I'll be financing so probs gonna be stuck with dealers, unless it is a really good private deal

I wouldn't put too much empahsis on finding a car with COMAND fitted, as they can be easily retrofitted.

For the colour, engine and spec, I think it's about £2k overpriced.

Here are some examples from eBay that look better value;

This looks very high spec, but at just under 100k miles it might be a bit leggy for you?

What is it 'missing'?

It's missing loads of optional extras, here is a quick list of the extras available off the top of my head;

1. Panoramic roof
2. COMAND/TV
3. Heated seats
4. Cooled seats
5. Memory seats (driver & passenger)
6. Rear blinds
7. 6 CD changer
8. Keyless Go
9. Distronic (laser guided cruise control)
10. Rear heated seats
11. Adaptive/orthopaedic front seats
12. Parking sensors
13. Rear TV
14. Air suspension

There's also different AMG wheels and body kits available.

You are a genius... the hunt continues! It does have (1), (3), (7), (12) from your list above - but 12 seem to not be working! I couldn't believe how comfy it was... I'm very picky too so I know where you are coming from.

Most E320 CDi Sports will have had a few options ticked when bought new, I think you'd really have to drop on to find a high spec E280 CDi.

The E320 with 85k miles on, just from the photos I can tell it has;
COMAND, heated seats, memory seats, parking sensors (and obviously Pano roof)
