E-Class Cab boot opening assist.

I hate to say it guys but i don't think you'd be able to increase the tension in that spring without replacing the spring itself.

To increase the tension in the spring you would need to put another turn in it (coil the spring tighter) which can be a little harzardous as you might take your eye out .

I would imagine the car is set to only pop the little and the assist spring helps take the weight of the boot lid (assist) the reason for this would be that if you was standing at the boot and used a boot button short people (like me) would get caught on the chin. I nearly done that with the w202 and expansion springs once to my girlfriend at the time ! i tightened the springs and popped the boot for her one day and very neary missed her.

If you really really really wanted to tighten it i would take it to a spring or hinge manufacturer like the one in hutton i use for odd little things but i doubt they would want to play with it very much as they could be held liable for either damage to the car on injury if they get it wrong and apply tooo much tension.

Is five the same shape all the way around? Otherwise there maybe some adjustment? Bit like a camshaft
Thanks for all your replies . I have taken off one off the spring units, there I noticed that number 3 in the photo has a 12mm multi faced cam that slightly adjusts the spring tension....... however it makes not a jot to the overall tension clean and lubed it up. but it's still the same So i either leave it as it is or buy new ones.

Maybe i could increase the tension by adding additional shims to the face.

If you unlock the boot with the remote, just how high will the boot lid lift up? See 3 minute mark in video below.

In picture, #3 looks like it can take a spanner and #4 looks like it can slide so as to enable #3 to be tensioned.

Hi Dec that's how I presume it should open. I have adjusted the cam to max, but it's the same. just unlocks and slightly opens.

It may be a ridiculous suggestion, but the smaller spring next to the tension units (a couple of centimetres from the tension units as I look in my boot), if that had more strength could pop it up once released? As you shut the boot, these are compressed.

Hi Thebook. I don't think the mechanism on the Cab is the same as the coupe. it just has these coils to assist the boot opening, I can't see anything else other than these black coil units ?

No, it's there. See picture
