- E220 CDI Avantgarde
Hi Guys,
I've been a happy driver of a E Class Mercedes 60 plate Avantgarde for nearly 11 months now. Bought it a week after passing my driving test and have done over 20,000 miles in it since (there's a baptism for you!). It generally drives well, but am having few issues which are concerning me especially as the Dealer (Sinclair Group, South Wales)warranty ends at the end of August.
It's an intermittent fault where while I am stopped at lights, junctions, or just generally on idle tick over, the rev moves. Sometimes it's more violent and I can feel the car twitching. It seems to pull along the right side. The dealer replaced the seals on the engine block at cost price, but that didn't solve it.
It's been in 4 or 5 times and usually shows no bad behaviour while they have it. The last time it went in, they had it for a week (they lent me a 14 plate C class estate in the meantime). The maintenance manager had it for the week, and up until the penultimate day everything was normal with it, then it happened while he was stopped at lights.
At this moment, I was happy cos I thought, great, they will know the reason. Except when they put the diagnostic machine in, the system showed no fault stored. They have basically said that they need it to be more constant for them to be able to find out what is wrong with it. They were hoping for it to do it while they had a diagnostic machine in.
They have tested the injectors and the valves and all is performing according to specification. I managed to lock the keys in the boot while I was away (thank god for mobilo who got me out of that hole) and in order to release the boot, the technician had to plug in a diagnostic machine. Murphys law 2 minutes after he had gone - he did some rudimentary checks afterwards - it did it again.
Another odd thing happened a few days ago. I was driving in the rain in East Anglia, and the left hand side air con (I had it on manual) were going up and down all by themselves and I was getting condensation on the left hand side exterior windscreen but nowhere else. They are going to have the car back to investigate this.
The dealer has been reasonably good, even writing me a note saying that they will cover the work even if it occurs after the expiry of the warranty. I asked if there was any record of these issues from the previous keeper (it was a lease car previously) but they said there was nothing on the records to indicate a problem.
It basically means I have a fantastic car that has niggles. It hasn't caused a breakdown, and as long as I keep my servicing in house I get mobilo. But it's frustrating. I wouldn't be prepared to sell the car privately with this issue and if i were to put it in, I know I'll take a hit, not least because of the amount of miles I have done (I did look at a lease/PCP at one point but with the miles I've done that would be expensive!).
I just feel that I'm handcuffed to the car. I do love the car. It generally runs fine, and this issue doesn't appear to happen when in motion, just at idle.
Any ideas?
