E220 Coupe 1996 - 120K

Need some sound advise. My E220 Coupe auto box is showing warning signs! At first it was just not pulling smoothly when reverse is engaged and felt as if the hand break was blocking the movement, which made reversing jerky. Going forward and changing through all other gears very even and smooth. Now I have noticed a few drops of oil under the car and when reverse is engaged it just does not go back at all. There appears to be something blocking the movement just like a hand break. When you let go of accelerator pedal the car jumps back forward. Going forward still absulutly fine.

Any ideas if the auto box is about to fail? Any recommendations for a specialist garage in Lonond area?

Many Thanks.

I'm not sure exactly what model you are talking of although this is for 722.5
which sounds like your problem, if this is not correct give me more of the vehicles details

E220 Coupe - gearbox rebuild

It appears that I will have to invest in rebuilding the gearbox if I want to use my revrse gear again. Is this worth doing and will it ever drive like it did with its original gearbox.

Anyone out there who has had a gearbox rebuild I would be glad to hear from you how the car functioned post the op.

Had a rebuild on my BMW before and it was alot better and the job was done right.

Never had a gearbox rebuild on my MB. Once your box is repaired, I don't think you would have any issues, JUST make sure you take it to a reputable gearbox specialist. There are alot of cowboys out there, you only have to look in the Exchange and Mart to find these!!

Also, if you are going to get the rebuild done on the reverse, you might as well do all the cogs on the other gears too as the labour should be the same, just pay for the extra bits of parts!!

Also, IMO I would always get a second opinion before spending all this money. You never know, it could be something simple like a loose link or something.

I agree with Vips, check everything out even the electrical connector on the right hand side of the gearbox. Its pointless just having the reverse sorted out, get the lot done, ok its going to cost in the region of £1500 but it would be money well spent, or you could drop me a pm as I have a spare box from 2.6
