I have a 2005 E280 automatic that has a problem accelerating specifically when over taking which is a bit dangerous. I have no problems when driving normally but if joining a motorway or overtaking a vehicle the car won't accelerate above about 40. I have no technical expertise so any response in simple language would be a real benefit.

Don't have much to go on but it could be your MAF (Mass-Air Flow). I had a problem a couple of years ago whereby the car would become sluggish, especially when accelerating. It gradually got worse, until the car became almost undrivable. It would also shake when coming to a standstill.
A new MAF resolved the problem.
Not saying this is your issue, but might be.

thanks I think I have seen that response before will get it checked out
