Hi

My father purchased an E280 CDI 2006 Facelift with 50000 miles, great condition and spec, runs fine but few issues with the engine:

- Engine is loud with a heavy deisel sound (like a 4-in line deisel engine)
- Vibration is felt through the floor and seats when the car is idling and accelerating
- Inside the car, when accelerating only, a tapping sound is heard, which is loud. used BP ultimate deisel fuel and the tapping sound went away, but after a few days the sound came back

we are sure that the engine mounts may be the reason because they have a 50000 mile lifetime if correct?

Because i'm sure Merc V6 deisels are ment to smooth and quiet without any annoying sounds

Much appreciated if anyone could help or if anyone could share their experiance

Maybe be injetor problelm try some total excellium. If noise goes away that could be problem.

thanks for response..

Just to make picture a bit clearer, i meant heavy deisel engine sound (only when idling) but not as loud like a 4-in line deisel engine...

Did try BP ultimate deisel as thats there top deisel fuel and suprisingly the sound went away and engine sounded sweet but after a few days the tapping noise came back again

I also considered using a fuel system cleaner (like valvoline) but the chap at a Mercedes Specialist garage said they are not good for merc v6 diesel engines...

I've been looking at a few merc forums and many members have mentioned that engine mounts can solve many common noises/rattles and vibrations. Can anyone advise on the lifetime of engine mounts in these new deisel engines..

Mine is unmistakably a diesel, but certainly doesn't sound anything like as noisy as the four pots.

- Vibration is felt through the floor and seats when the car is idling and accelerating
Nope, the V6 is smooth and I can't say I've noticed any real vibes from it. I didn't really notice any serious vibes from my previous E220 either.

- Inside the car, when accelerating only, a tapping sound is heard, which is loud. used BP ultimate deisel fuel and the tapping sound went away, but after a few days the sound came back
Mine sounds slightly gruff when accelerating, but I haven't noticed any tapping sounds.

Engine noises are notoriously difficult to diagnose via forums since one person's 'light ticking' noise is another's 'heavy knocking' sound. From your description, it would probably be worth consulting your local dealer / indy for an opinion.

I think you should discount the expensive fuel side of it...
I promise you it will not be related to your noise. Its just coincidence.

D-18... thanks for info, thats what I expected, as merc diesels are known for being sweet, my e280 cdi is very quiet once driving but at acceleration it is also gruff (as you described it) but just with that extra annoying tapping sound. most likely this is a job for the mechanics to look at.

thanks.

mbenz1 - I hope any further investigation turns up a simple solution and your father can then enjoy wafting about in his Merc. Keep us posted.
