I recently experienced vibration when stationary in reverse. When cold it was present in park and neutral but after some ten miles of town driving it faded away. There was also a knock when starting and stopping the engine similar to the exhaust hitting the bodywork. There was no noise at all when in drive either stationary or in motion. Over the period of a week the noise became considerable worse.
My first thought was the exhaust systems, maybe a broken bracket weld, but a visit to a specialist proved this theory to be wrong.
A visit to my local garage that I have used for years, the foreman is Merc trained, the prop bearing was found to be badly worn. The prop was taken to a specialist repairer to replace the bearing. He discovered the splines were badly worn and the vibration was probably the combination of both prop parts. I had a new prop from Merc fitted, replacement splines were not available for my bar code.
The vibration is still there but only in reverse now, the new prop is not vibrating.
I've now been told the box needs reprogramming as there is a software problem with auto boxes starting with 703**. If this doesn't work then the torque converter may be the problem. The bill is starting to mount.
Any thoughts please?
