I'm in Copenhagen at the mo on a business trip and got picked up by an E280 CDI from the airport. Anyone know if this coming to the UK to replace the 270CDI? I understand that the 280 CDI is a 3 litre (like the 320 CDI) but is just tuned differently?

On another note, cars are darn expensive out here (pre tax prices appear okay, but they have 180% tax on cars). You can't get round it easily, if you buy outside Denmark you're liable for the tax when you import or regiuster it in Denmark. Similarly we can't benefit from the local low pre-tax price as we have to pay the local taxes first and then claim them back in the UK after paying UK VAT! One of the guys in the office here lives 50km away in Sweden and has a 225bhp Audi TT which would be almost unthinkable in Denmark! We thought we had it bad!!!

I've just come back from there where I was picked up by a succession of E-Class saloons and estates. Apart from one S-Class and the driver was a lunatic. He did have the 4.0 V8 diesel engine though and it is a peach!

Are you there for the same conference that I was at earlier this week? :-)

No, I'm here on a fact finding mission! Out of interest what where you out here for?

I'm looking at a Microsoft Axapta implementation and Cisco VOIP that one of our sister companies is putting in.

I was at a big HP conference at the Bella Center. Just trying to do my expenses - I have no idea how I am going to get them through. Every single one exceeds the limits - including a single beer!

I don't suppose the HP conference showcased any stuff to do with EVA SANs?

Tell me about it, £3.50 for a coffee, £130 for a meal for 3 of us with only 1 person drinking (he only had 1 beer!) Luckily they're picking up the tab for that as I'm a 'guest'. I thought London & Switzerland were expensive! Must stop moaning me thinks...

Hmmm - strange you should mention that. Yes it did! I was there as a host for one of my "guests" :-)

It's just that I'm looking at this as are my Danish counterparts. I was considering the EVA3000's but maybe now the EVA4000's as the other is going end of line for the implementation we're planning in the UK.

I'll drop you my email address. Feel free to bounce it off me.

A-Avantgarde, unless it was an old Europe only E-class, it might have been a new V6 diesel. In addition to the much praised new 320CDI (V6 as opposed to the old in-line 6), there will be a detuned V6 badged 280

The new E280 CDI and E320CDI are indeed the same 3ltr V6 engine and are planned to eventually grace our shores.

Have you ever driven the 270CDI and if so, how did it compare?

Regards,
John

Jeremey, yep it was one of the new V6 diesel current shape W211's. That's why I was impressed :D But they are appearing here now, as is the 350 petrol and the detuned 280's (both diesel & petrol) too. The 280 petrol takes over from the 240.

Of course, just to confuse things more, in the past you could get a C30 AMG in France and elsewhere in EU. This seems to have been a bored out 270 CDI with extra AMG trim, etc.. It was all a bit pricey and with higher emissions, which is probably why M-B never imported it (with UK company car tax based on emissions and list price, etc.).

I seem to remember John Simister testing it in Diesel Car magazine, with the engine fitted to a Sports Coupe.

I'll be interested to hear of anyone who has driven a C320CDI, and how much quicker it is than a 270 (obviously it'll be smoother being a V6, but then 6 cylinder diesels are never that economical - the urban figure being the most representative of average driving IMHO).

Having chipped my 270 for £450, I don't think I'll be spending £20,000 on trading mine for a new C320!!

I was involved in the install of an EVA 5000 last year at a large car company headquarters. Damn fine piece of kit.
Certainly better than the fastT200 I currently have.......

I tried a friends 270 cdi before buying my 280 cdi. The 280 is much smoother but apart from that there is little discernible difference. Not that I am interested but it might be that a re chipping could give the 280 the same performance characteristics as the 320.

Thank you very much, and it sounds like the 280CDI has more than enough power.

I've asked my dealer to let me know as soon as they have a E280 or the new E320CDi in available to test drive. I'll post my thoughts if they do get back to me.

Hi Richard,
I have just been looking at the Mercedes-Benz UK site and interestingly enough they list both the 280 and 320CDI's as being 2967cc BUT.... both are listed as 6 cylinder in-line engines!! Do we know something Mercedes-Benz don't know?

Good luck,
John

When I look it shows them as a V6.

Number of Cylinders/arrangement: 6/V

Hi Richard,
My turn for the  . It looks like we are proof reading the Mercedes-Benz UK web site for them.

The link you have kindly posted clearly shows the new engine to be the V6. BUT........

I looked at the estate car!! ;) You clearly have more interest in saloons so did not look at the estates, and my situation is just the opposite. I looked at the estate, and failed to look at the saloon!

Hence:

http://www2.mercedes-benz.co.uk/con...estate/technical_data/diesel_models.0004.html

six cylinder in-line!! Looks like we have solved the confusion issue, unless Mercedes-Benz rectify the fault before you get a chance to see the mistake.

I wonder who proof reads their sites and how much do they get paid?

Have a nice day,
John
