Hi Guys, this is probably a dump question. However the manual does appear to be of much help. It says if hot leave the engine 5mins, if you've cranked it and its not up to temp leave 20mins or so...

So am i meant to check the oil when hot or cold, the reason for asking is the oil is spot on when hot, however when cold it's halfway down the dipstick, which i'm guessing is about a 1L (if the manual is right in saying it's 2L between min and max).

So i'm risking an overfill of about a 1L.... argh why did they add in the second 'if you crank it' option.

Cheers
Gi

1. Check the oil level when engine is at full working temperature (i.e. hot).

2. After the engine reached working temperature, leave the car standing for 5 minutes with engine switched-off to allow the oil to drain back into the sump.

3. Check oil level - it should be a smidgen UNDER the max mark when engine if fully hot. Make sure the car is on level ground of course.

4. Level going down to halfway between min and max when engine is cold is normal.

5. Overfilling can cause issues, and on Diesel engines can even be fatal (for the engine, that is).

Thanks, glad i didnt put any oil in!

Does your car actually have an engine oil dipstick - I would have thought it would be electronic?

It's a MY10 model, it's got a red dipstick at the top right of the engine. It's not the easiest of ones to put back in, the braided rod bends and needs holding.

I haven't looked to see if there is an electronic one as well, would be easier if there was.
