Hi, I purchased the car yesterday, and thanks to other forum members I sorted the tyre pressure issue, the car felt great. On my 30 mile journey tonight there was a lot of stop start on the way there, but car was running fine. On the way home the Temp Warning came on the dashboard and I could see steam from drivers side corner of the car. I managed to stop fairly quickly, the expansion tank was nuclear hot, after sometime I was able to loosen enough to allow the burbling water out, I left it for another ten minutes or so and added maybe a 1/2 litre of water. On ignition temp showed as halfway, I stuck on the heater full blast and drove another 5 miles till home, during this the temp gauge stayed fairly in the middle with the occasional rise and fall. At home on idle the car was sitting at correct temp, but if I revved it rose sharply once.
When I first stopped I could see no water/coolant under car.

Any advice on what to do next would be much appreciated, I have a very limited budget which I know is not good for this type of car, but it seemed right. Please feel free to come up with any ideas or solutions, I am not a mechanic but can follow a plan.

Many Thanks and fingers crossed.

On a 09 you have to favour a knackered thermostat firstly.

Head gasket failure isn't impossible,but on a diesel ??

Water pump I suppose could be another suspect ??

I would check the Thermostat first, cheap fix and relatively easy to do......

Thanks seems thermostat is most likely hopefully.

Thank you this seems to be the most likely problem. I will try and find a tutorial to see if I can do it.

Apart from draining the coolant, that's not applicable to the Mercedes diesel V6, I'm afraid.

Ok thanks for the heads up, started to think I could do it myself.
Park uphill and drain the coolant tank using a Syphon tube . You won't lose any coolant.

Thank you, trying to find part and a garage.
Could you also start it from cold and monitor the temperatures of the various hoses going to the radiator? If the radiator circuit stays cool that might indicate the thermostat isn't opening? That's normally how i test my thermostats anyway. If the hose going to and from the radiator gets hot to me it would suggest the problem might be elsewhere, like a failing pump?

Yes I will try this. Thanks

It was private. so no come back unfortunately.
Unless it was advertised as without fault. In that case it was misrepresented and you could have a claim against the seller.

Did you check all of the fluid levels before buying?

I did, I just want to get the car fixed, struggling to get a garage or a part here in Glasgow.
