E500 AMG ... hmmm

he has left a message for all the moaning ebay complainers.
reminds me of the C class AMG brabus a few months ago.

Each AMG engine is hand-built by a master technician to ensure build quality, and is certified with the technician’s signature on a plaque. AMG’s philosophy is “one person, one engine.”

ask him who signed the engine

i have never believed the handbuilt amg crap.
They make about 19000 engines in a year, not counting the ones they make for DTM and pagani Zonda.
their hands will be jelly by now.

Whys handbuilt better anyhow?

Klaus arrives to work in Affalterbach with a terrible hangover after AMGs xmas party - downing contest with the boys from BRABUS, starts work on your engine feeling like death... or

X43255-5722-B team of Robots start creating an engine with a amazing accuracy, always the same with German efficiency?

Perfectly believable - don't listen to what Clarkson has to say.

Only takes 3 hours to assemble one - two a day - ten a week per person. 50 engine assembly staff.

there was a video on here.. a lot of it is done by robots... all the guys do is insert things and screw a few bolts with a big hanging glorified ratchet set..

It's not hand built in a shed, it's hand built in a purpose built facility!!

If you watch the videos on the AMG website, the technician has specialised machinery that helps - I suspect partly for health & safety reasons - but the technician orchestrates the build.

I thought each engine was about 3 hours too, so each technician can build 460 engines per annum, based upon the following assumptions:

46 weeks each year
5 days each week
6 hours per day
3 hours per engine

1380 productive hours per annum
460 engines per annum per technician

40 technicians
18400 engines per annum total

I am not listening to clarkson. if you go tho the amg site you will see it goes through a manufacturing process. the hand used is to put on the switches. the signatures are more like quality control checks not hand built one. 3hrs to build a whole new engine by hand hmm.

How come when it comes to servicing or CHG jobs , they charge you 10hrs labour?
surely it is more economical to just build a new engine in 3hrs?

I am a huge fan of the AMG engine but the hand built claim is really playing to the crowd and to me it is meaningless. A robot is programmed to perform a function perfectly twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The machine is programmed. A person 'hand' building an engine will hopefully use sockets to tighten the nuts and bolts, not his hands, the socket will hopewfully be torqued down to a specific specification? I am hoping the employee will use some sort of gadget to tighten these bolts and not their hands? During the manufacture I suppose the build of the engine is monitored more closely by human beings, but is that really necessary?

I am not knocking this claim but I do take it with a very large pinch of salt.

Regards
John

Surprising how quickly you could do it with plenty of training, practice and skill. Plus having all the right tools on hand, and the parts queued up ready for use with some pre-assembly, and plenty of space, will no doubt make it a good deal quicker too.

did i? he never mentioned DTM cars did he?
only zonda so it was not exactly word for word.

if you can get what car mag january 2000, there is an amg spread in there.
since merc took over in 1999 the only hand made parts are the interior.

one man one engine is the philosophy, not hand built

Handcrafted - not handbuilt :)

Why would anyone want a hand-built engine (whatever that means)? I'd rather have my cars built in a fully automated factory than hand-crafted by fallible human beans!:)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Af4N2Vt57xM! This is the way to go! (Sorry about the quality)

Is this how MB makes them too?
