I had my W212 remapped on Saturday, all seems well and I left with no issues.

Today I took my car to a wheel refurb company, they put some 17s Merc replacement wheels on my car for the time being whilst my 18s are in until Friday.

I drove away slowly for 2 minutes and a few warning lights and issues popped up:

- EBD, ABS and traction control inoperative
- Pre-safe functions limited
- run-flat indicator inoperative
- speedo doesn't work, both needle and digital stays at zero
- power steering is off

However speed is not limited like in limp mode. Restarting the car didn't help.

The remap place did mess with the ECU whilst remapping but they cleared all faults before leaving and no faults for 2 days. I am thinking maybe changing the wheels triggered or damaged something? Or could it be as simple as changing back to my wheels and it will go back to normal again?

Some other forum members also suggested faulty modules or speed sensors.

What do you guys think?

I will perhaps wait till I get my wheels back to see if it goes away before I do anything, but the timing of this makes me wonder who it could be. It's terrible to drive without power steering.

He was basically just swapping the wheels over. The back wheel was a little tough to take off so he did use one of those rubber hammers to hammer it out from behind.

Just where are these sensors located?

I have since done tons of reading, the smaller replacement 17 inch wheels (mine are 18s but same style) may throw the sensors off a bit triggering the warnings, i hope it's that simple.

I just went out to start it and the faults are still there. I also noticed the lights didn't come on when i unlock the car (the auto lights usually come on at night). Whatever the fault is, it has an effect on a lot of things.

Wheel sensors do not like being knocked about, damaged one on my Lexus just splitting a ball joint.

Isn't hammering the wheels off a standard procedure? I have seen many places do it.

Anyone know where these speed sensors are located? Are they on all 4 wheels?

The car is still the same this morning, I got a yellow engine light as well. It's weird driving without speedo.

Here are some pictures, anyone changed to a different size wheels triggering warnings on the dash?

Here he was, putting some replacement wheels on.

Just noticed that you have changed from 18" to 17". Is that causing the wheel sensors to think that the wheels are not rotating at the correct speed. Not sure if you have to tell something via STAR that the wheel diameters are different. The alternative is to wait for your original wheels to come back and see if the problem goes away.

Curious, what was the purpose of the remapping?

Have a look at the tyre sizes front and rear. Report back with your findings.

This is nothing to do with changing to 17s.

It was for more performance

I will take a look in a bit, even though the 17s are smaller but they have much bigger tyres it seems

I checked and the difference is quite big.

My standard front is 245/40/18, replacement is 215/40/17 (-7% diameter, -11% width, -13% sidewall)

Standard rear is 265/35/18, replacement is 225/45/17 (-1% diameter, -14% in width, sidewall is +8%)

I think there is a good chance that is why the sensors are not happy and throwing up warning lights. I will keep you guys updated on Friday.

Hopefully this will give potential wheel buyers something to think about - it doesn't like different size wheels.

Right, just went to collect my refurbed wheels, he put it back and when he told me how much it was I nearly fainted as he had misunderstood my instruction and diamond cut it instead of powdercoat it.

I did think why is it so shiny, now at double the price, I know why!

Anyway off I went, all but the engine light went off, power steering came back on immediately. I popped into KFC, came out and started the car again and even the engine light is gone.

How very strange! Only conclusion is my car only like the its standard wheels.

Excuse the old centre caps, I thought it came out quite well.

He convinced me the finish is just as durable as others, I just have to wash it with water and nothing else. Powdercoat is bit tougher but again, only a layer of lacquer away from corrosion as well.
