Emissions/MOT question

Hey all, I was using that online MOT checker tool, and noticed a few MOT's ago it failed on a few notes - most I understand, but these I do not:
 • Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.2b)
 • Exhaust emissions carbon monoxide content at idle excessive (7.3.2c)
 • Exhaust emissions hydrocarbon content after 2nd fast idle excessive (7.3.2b)
What causes that, and how would it have been fixed? Is it something that is likely to crop up again?

That was on the 2007 test, and it sailed though the 2008 test with no problems, however I imagine the dealer 'knew a man who will pass your MOT' when it went through that one, as in 2007 an advisory was issued for:
 • Rear all brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c)
Yet the brakes feel like they need to be redone still, and there was no advisory at all on the 2008 MOT. I'd like to make sure the car will pass next years MOT with no issues by getting it up to scratch this year before its due again.

While I'm at it, what kind of cost would it be on the 202 to get the brake pipes sorted out if they haven't yet been done?

For the brake pipes just rub them back with a wire brush and coat them with rust preventative wax.

The Co and HC looks like the mixture was set too rich. Do you have the actual readings fort he 2008 test?

Thanks for the tip on the brake lines. As for the emissions numbers, don't have them I'm afraid, just the certificate.

Is it possible to have the car taken through a fake MOT to get an idea of what may be hidden that needs doing? I'm presuming that if it failed a fake MOT I'd still be allowed to drive it...

You can have a MOT check carried out at any time, it makes no difference to your eleigibility of current MOT.

Ah nice one. By the way, the CAT on the exhaust has died completely and needs replacing - if it was "going" on the 2007 MOT, would that have been a possible cause for those readings?

(The retest was done somewhere else)

Yes it could be depending on the figures. Sometimes a really hard, and I mean really hard thrash can bring a cat back to life for a while.
Best done on a RR and pulsing the throttle application on an off to get it really hot.

Excellent, thanks for the help :) I'm due to get the whole exhaust replaced soon, once that's done I'll get it through a service and then a pre MOT and see what else is lurking. I'll no doubt be back for more in the future!
