Engine mount - time to change?

How many miles on them ? when were they last changed ? any oil leaking out ?

That looks a little too much to my untrained eye , I replaced them a while back on my C55 , my engine does not move quite that much.

The engine is on the original mounts and the car has just under 92k miles. No visible leaks, looking from above. Driver side moves a little more than the other side. Both sides are probably on their way out. I am considering to replace them like for like, no upgrades.

92K , probably overdue . I bought Lemforder for mine , same as you get from MB . There are all sorts of 'upgrades' available including non oil filled 'polymer' types, I have no experience with those , but the engine movement and vibration has to go somewhere so my guess is it will go into the chassis if solid mounts are used.

Do the transmission mount at the same time .

Anecdotally I hear part numbers can differ for mounts that look identical , something to do with the viscosity of the oil inside being of various viscosities . Not sure 🤷‍♂️

92k yep replace them and the gearbox one also.

Here is an old one from Alex on C55 , most probably very similar to yours. I did not remove the exhaust as he did , might be something to do with his being LHD.

I couldnt get the wrench extension (1:40sec) in time, so I made one , it can be done without it , at least on a M113 in a C55

12:25sec in shows you the dancing engine before and after.

If you DIY an engine beam is the minimum piece of kit you need. Use only genuine Lemforder parts .

Good luck.

Thanks all, I will go ahead with the replacement. I replaced the gearbox mounts last year. I should’ve probably done the engine mounts then as well.

The engine mounts are now replaced. As I suspected, they were originals with 92k miles on them. They're a bit collapsed and I can rock them with hand but they aren't in terrible condition. No visible leaks nor collapsed enough to cause metal on metal contact. I am happy that I have replaced them and impressed by how well they held on.

Does your engine rock a lot less now they've been changed?

I feel like new mounts improved in-cabin comfort but to a negligible degree. Probably because my original mounts were not blown, they were just a little collapsed. They lasted 92k miles, well done MB. I could potentially get 20k-30k miles out of them.

Here is an after video. The engine sits higher but it still rocks to the same degree, though I press the accelerator a little less gently compared to the before video.

Nice car! Looks identical to mine. How long have you had it and how are you finding it ?

At least your engine is in a more correct position now. My mounts are sunk too. Car has 80k so I'll be changing them soon. Is your rear subframe and brake lines looking okay ?

Looks to me like the engine can rock more now the mounts are done ? Or just looks that way after being woken up by a 3 year old on 5 hours sleep

Thanks! I’ve had it for just under 4 years and I love it. It’s a car I rely on, I have driven it 40k miles since I bought it. It isn’t a weekend toy for me, it’s an everyday toy.

My rear subframe has been changed FOC by MB due to rust. I had renewed the rear brake lines few months before the subframe job, again due to rust. I also changed transmission pan due to same reason last year along with transmission mount as it was collapsed and mount bracket which was also corroded. There’s no other corrosion left under the car. Never had corrosion on the body. Based on my experience certain parts under this model are more susceptible to rust. Maybe they used substandard steel in this model because my W124 has never had any rust issues and pretty much lived in the same conditions.

Engine may seem like rocking even more than the first video because this time I really pressed the pedal. I was more gentle the last time.

Nice one, veteran owner! . I had a tranny service done recently on mine (I've only had it 2 months ) . The ride quality seems far less supple than my facelift 212 e63 s version that I had for 3 years, not sure if some shocks need to be replaced, or whether the performance pack on the early pre facelifts just rode that way or the nappa non dynamic seats on the facelift are just more comfortable. Still, it's not bad but just stiffer than I was expecting. I just had the subframe done under goodwill and forced the dealer I bought it from to take the hit on the brake lines.

I'm thinking all mounts next and fuel injectors. It's MOT runs out at the end of October. It's not my daily as my commute is only 10 minutes and I use my poor e93 M3 for that. And i definitely want to do something to the exhaust too

Good result regarding the subframe and brake lines.
I have not driven a facelift one before so I cannot compare the two. I would say the ride is not too harsh. Maybe get your suspension components checked and if anything is out the supplying dealer will hopefully cover the cost.
Regarding the injectors, I changed mine at 60k miles and they were carboned up despite using premium fuel only. They were not stuck open, I changed them as a preventative measure.

That's why I'll be changing my injectors just in case they decide to stick open and flood the engine.

I just wonder if the performance pack was a bit stiff on the prefacelift but they managed to refine the damping on the facelift s.
The facelift is a lot more refined but that's only a good thing if you want it to feel like a luxury rather than sports car. The cabin is reasonably similar but the cabin in the S is a relatively fair bit more plush. Then there's the power difference is huge and delivery of it, but the 6.2l is more satisfying to drive as a daily as you can rev it a lot more. Rev the S and you're picking up speed too fast and the fun is over too quick if you want to keep within speed limits, it's a significant step up if you like really aggressive fast driving (I do ,but never got the opportunity enough) and it's main advantage when it comes to increased power and speed then makes that MCT transmission seem inadequate to deal with the engine's capability. Both great cars for what they are but at half the price, the prefacelift is a lot of car for the money !
