Engine temp in the red!

Have been stuck in a few traffic snarl ups over the last few days, and have noticed the needle on the temp gauge heading into the red

It seems the fans are not cutting in, does anybody have any ideas where to start fault finding??

Cheers,

E or sm*rt?

Assume E:-

1) do the patented carrot test on the fan (engine). (get engine hot - can you stop fan with a carrot? yes = dead viscouse coupling, no = good viscous coupling)

2) check fan itself - disconnect from loom, jury rig wires to power, does fan spin? (electric one)

3) check relay for fan (dont know on e class - sorry)

4) check / replace temp sensor (there are 3 on some - a) ECU one b) fan one c) gauge one)

5) check wiring (visual and with multimeter)

As a tip, if you find that your engine is getting hot and you need a temporary solution to sort it out, then put your heater on HOT and fan on FULL. This should help eleviate the problem somewhat, but isn't a long term solution. Could be helpful if stuck in traffic.

I'll second that one you would be suprised how quickly it brings the temerature down. Have had to use it as a temporary fix before on other cars and also on the C180 when I had the engine running for a few hours with the music playing at our camping pitch when at Ultimate Street Car and it was a hot day. Temp never went over half.

Used to have to the the heater and fan on jobby in a Ford Sierra we used to have. Was a good temporary solution.

Hope this is not as nasty as it might be and that you get it diagnosed and sorted pdq ;)

Thanks Guy, yes it is the E. I think I can cope with the carrot test :D but will need to call in my local friendly "Leccy" for the rest :D

The other thing obviously, is to check coolant levels. I'm sure that would/ could make a distinct difference with your engine temps!

The key, is to ensure that you don't let it over heat..otherwise it can cause long term damage to other parts in the engine. Good luck mate!

The funny thing is the needle never actually goes into the red section, just hovers just underneath it, on the line?

Will get it sorted sharpish though :D
