Depends what you mean by 'a lot'. All engines have a certain amount of blowby, and I suspect that diesels, because of the much higher compression pressures, may be worse than petrol engines.

Very normal

Hi mate do this. unscrew oil cap and just place it over the oil lid, dont screw it on. If you see excessive movement of the cap then piston rings and inside of engine is on its way out. As long as you cannot feel alot of air coming out of it, its absolutely normal. This is because there are moving parts inside the engine and oil is always moving so ofcourse its gonna spill out.................

I haven't heard that one before. What is the logic behind it?

This question reminds me of an incident in the mid-eighties. I worked for a wellknown lubricants company and had a brand new W124 company car, the first E200 automatic to come off the assembly line in East London. At the time, field tests were being conducted on a new engine oil blend and my car was chosen as one of the test beds. From time to time an oil sample had to be extracted and after one such extraction, unknown to me, the sampler failed to replace the oil filler cap. Getting onto the freeway, after sitting in heavy traffic, I suddenly had some green spray on the windscreen. When I stopped to investigate, the car had oil tears running down both head lights. The oil had been spewed out of the oil filler opening by the cam gear and in the slow traffic, ran down the bonnet liner and onto the headlights. At speed, it had then blown back onto the windscsreen. Fortunately, I found the misplaced cap and the engine still had just enough oil to reach a filling station. The engine bay was an absolute mess and despite several cleaning attempts, I could never get rid of all the oil residue. Years later, it was still seeping from the crevices and wrapped cables.

At the time there was a local TV advert where the husband, looking inside the refrifgerator for the coffee creamer, shout to his wife: "Honey where is the Cremora?", and she replied in a high pitched voice: " It is not inside, it is on top!". Well, my engine oil was not inside, it was on top of the engine, all over the engine bay, and beyond.

I had a similar experience with an Austin All-aggro : the plastic filler cap had a retaining strap riveted into the middle and this disintegrated to spew oil all over the engine bay when the car was only a few weeks old .

Green oil ? Duckhams ?
