Error Code U0106

I'm having starting issues from cold on my 2017 E350d A207 Convertible. It turns over normally, fires but the engine hunts then stops. Lat night it took 14 attempts before it started and continued to run but it runs 'lumpy' for a while. Once started there's often heavy greyish smoking and a smell of diesel fumes which both clear after a period of time. The engine management light is on and, occasionally, the glow plug light flashes very briefly. Once the engine is warm it starts normally and without any issues.
The error code is U0106 Lost Communication With Glow Plug Control Module.
Any advice please on what this is likely to be and what steps to take?

This could be a wiring issues - cable chafing, water or oil ingress into connectors, etc.

The relevant cables and connectors need to be physically inspected.

Also check for power to the Glow Plug module and it's grounding and check if it is giving an output to the plugs. .
