my CLK is rattling at idle. From exhaust under drivers door. My initial thought was the cat(s) but having got under there with a long piece of wood I can stop it rattling by simply pressing the exhaust up towards the underside of the car. So I’m thinking heat shield is loose. Does that sound right? Would not expect a duff cat to stop rattling simply by pressing lightly on the exhaust.....what do people think? It’s booked in for annual service in a few weeks so will have it sorted then. Was just curious as to whether it was a £££££ job or a simple bracket fix!

A loose heatshield does seem the obvious culprit. My indy removed the bolt holding the rear heatshield on and just put a big washer on where the shield had come away from the bolt.
Yours may just need tightening up.

Possibly a heat shield. The rear silencer supports/brackets are a weak point too. Ours at 15 years old is still on the original exhaust but one of the brackets for the rear box had rotted. The exhaust guys cut one from a rotten Astra exhaust and welded it in place. Apparently the brackets are identical!

It could still be the cat core rattling - pressing up on the exhaust will tend to damp out any vibrations to some extent and stop the rattle. Had this on an old Jeep. Loose heatshield probably more likely though.

Cheers all. Will report back when it was been fixed!

To conclude the post, turned out to be a broken exhaust bracket. My mechanic welded it back on and all is quiet again! Thanks for input.
