Hi Guys,

New to the club and to Mercedes in general but have now got a 98 SLK230, I'm not sure if this is a problem but would like someone to put my mind at rest,
The FAN, It sometimes comes on literally minutes after it's gone off, If I'm sat at the lights then I hear it come on, after pulling away the gauge needle will go back up and the temp will read 380, the temp has never moved away from 380, but then shortly after it's stopped it will come back on again,
It justseems to me that it's coming on alot more than it usually would or should ???,
Anyone have any ideas ? or is this normal ?
By the way I do live in Spain and yes it's hot , but i'm not there alot of the time, I purchased the car in March when it's quite cool and it was happening then.

Thanks

Shane

Welcome Shane.
My temp gauge reads between 80 and 100 all the time, depending on conditions.
You must have a different gauge from the one I have on my SLK.

Have you made a mistake with the 380º ? Should it not be 80º ? I thought all gauges, or most at least were measured in Celsius.

Unless your gauge is marked in kelvin degrees. 80º Celsius is equal to 353º Kelvin or 380º Kelvin is 107º Celsius.

:confused::confused:

Do you use your A/C a lot as that will have an effect on the cooling system or could be that you need a new sensor.

Thanks for your ideas fella's, I'm fairly certain it reads 380, when the Fan comes on the needle drops, when it goes off the needle rises again, I havent had the car that long and as i said I'm not there that often as i'm currently in Afghanistan,
Yes i do have the A/C on but not very often, only when the wifes in the car really :)

I shall do a complete check over when I'm home next as it's due it's ITV ( MOT ) If i can get it on a diagnostic run, would that tell me if anything was pete or about to go pete tong ?
These sites / forums are absolutley great and I appreciate your help, ty

Yours is a newer version BEJ so maybe yes, did they not make a few changes from 2001 onwards ? The car runs great and really does get a shift on when i kick down, and the traction control is fab, anyway I'll check it over when i get home, Ive been meaning to put something on this site for a long time , just never got around to it,

Thanks mate
