From a W212 E63 to an S204 C150K

Even if you're not planning on asking the seller to contribute the cost of the thermostat (which if I had bought from a dealer I would be even if it is cheap), I would still get back to them and let them know that there is a cool running problem with the car. In the unlikely event that it turns out to be something more than the thermostat you don't want them washing their hands of it on the basis that you have gone and had repairs done (even if it was the right thing to do)

Oh I will be letting them know once I have taken it to my indy tomorrow.

It's been too wet to check the cam magnets W1ghty. Also got to get the correct socket to undo those Torx bolts.
As soon as its dry for a couple of hours.
Just unplug the electrical plugs , that’s where the oil might be . DON’T touch the bolts !!

The M157 has the same weakness, of oil seeping past the camshaft position sensors and along the loom to the ECU. My E63's engine on 80K miles had it; The one in the CLS, on 50k miles, isn't doing it - yet...

Probably best not to google m271 engine......:D
although yours is one of the later (better) ones I guess
Oh I've heard plenty of negative things about the engine.
If it lasts me a couple of years its done its job.

Cam magnet wiring checked, no sign of oil.
New OEM thermostat bought and will be fitted this weekend.
Took 8 miles to get the temperature gauge to rise above 60c this morning.

Rang the dealer earlier and he has agreed to cover the cost. Seems fair enough.

Buy the ”wire blockers” for the cam magnets , they save any trouble when the cam magnets start leaking (they will)

Fitted the new Wahler thermostat this morning. Easiest job I've ever done on a car I think. It took longer to collect the tools gloves and cleaning rags than doing the job. Must have taken all of 10 minutes in total. Only lost about an egg cup full of coolant too. Certainly no need to drain the radiator to do the job. Just pull out the old thermostat and housing and push in a small cloth wrapped in plastic to stop the coolant leaking from the engine block.

Took the car for a run, and the temperature gauge went up to 85c within a mile. Blasting out hot air and the mpg visibly improved over just a 5 mile run.
Well worth doing myself as a local indy wanted £99 per hr diagnostics plus fitting charges.

Old thermostat

New thermostat with supplied O-Rings fitted.

New thermostat comes in a Borg Warner box with a small Wahler logo.
Wahler clearly stamped on the thermostat.
I returned the main dealer one that cost me over £50 and got an OEM one from Lithuania for £23, delivered in a week.

For anyone thinking of changing the thermostat in an M271 engine, the faulty one I removed was a Wahler with Part# A271 203 03 75
Part since updated with # A271 203 05 75
Borg Warner Part # 3457.90D

Gradually getting through the small list of jobs I want to do to bring the car up to how I want it.

Today, I changed the manky o/s/f fog light. I did spot it during the purchase and got myself a replacement from an ebay supplier that arrived in 4 days.

Manky one

Removing the old one is simple enough but getting arch liner out proved more difficult so just folded it back and exposed the plug and 4 xT20 torx screws. I also removed the plastic fog lamp grill at the front to give room from the front. That grill is held in with 3xT15 torx screws.

The old lamp is pulled out from inside the wheel arch and the new one held in place whilst a couple of the T20 screws are put in finger tight.
Feeling my age kneeling down and peering inside a folded back arch liner doing this:(
All screws secure the lamp and the aim will have to be adjusted when its dark. No idea where the beam is at the moment but I think I got the adjustment screw wound in as far as the old lamp. Refit the plug and test the lamp is working. Refit the front plastic grill.

Looking better.

Final job, prepare and paint the hubs and calipers front and rear. Then its done.

Owned the S204 for just over a month and its doing fine.
No problems since thermostat changed and mpg on a 20mile run seem around 32-35mpg.

I checked on my previous E63 and notice that the new owner still hasn't taxed it. Should have done it on 01/09/2022.
Just as well I have the letter from DVLA acknowledging the transfer on 1st Sept. I don't need demands from them for backdated road fund licence.
