Hello all,

Please I need your advice, I took my B class W246 (2017) to my local MB dealer for a fault with one of the keys...only to be told that the front brake discs and pads is almost 90% gone and needs to be changed for about £450. The brake light hasn't come on the dashboard yet.

The car is mainly used for short journey of about 20mins to work, with a current mileage of about 17k, 11k when purchased. So now I'm puzzled, how is it possible for a car which is less than 3 years old have a worn out brake...is this common?

Also is the price quoted for the front brake disc and pad reasonable?

Thanks.

Hi. The discs are a certain thickness when new and can wear by about 1mm before they should be replaced.
Did the dealer tell you why they need replacing as 17k is not that much?
Are you under a warranty arrangement that requires you to use an authorised dealer?
If not look for a good MB independent or are you able to do this yourself?
This is quite a straightforward job requiring basic tools with parts costing around £100 for Brembo/Pagid/Ate which are OEM suppliers.

Euro Car Parts have 50% off brake parts this weekend.

I'd seek a 2nd opinion from another garage - 90% wear in only 17k miles does seem excessive, unless the previous owner was a complete hooligan :)

It is not unheard of for mechanics, sorry techicians, to misread the where and generate a sale for the workshop. I once had a car that went from 60% worn to 40% worn over 12 months / 8k miles....

When was the MoT done / when is it due?
