When I turn the ignition key on my W202 C230K from 2nd to 3rd position (the next position actually starts the car) I can hear some little noises. In was in an underground parking bay at work, with concrete on 3 sides, and had the window open, so the noises were more noticeable. What happens is this...

1 Click...Click
2 Woooooo...

It seems to me that some air vent / valve is opening and some kind of fan is coming on. It doesn't sound like something bad (car always did it since I bought it)...but not knowing what it is is beginning to annoy me...if you see what I mean. Answers gratefully received.

quite normal it could be a number of things like the cannistor purge valve/fuel regulator getting up to pressure/air injection control unit

Thanks Teky
It was just that being in an enclosed space situation amplified the noise so much that I started to wonder about it...Actually it was a bit of a shock. Normally with windows closed and outside in the fresh air, its hardly detectable.

I think I can relate to the noise you mean. I let go of the key too early, before it fired once in my garage.

For about a second I get a very slight 'whirring' sound which is somewhere behind the instuments I think its something to do with the security system  Its not annoying though, quite fascinating really!!!. Also I do hear some ventilation flap movement inside behind where the heater gubbins would be, I think this is to stop smells coming into the car when stood. Do you know if you move the key all the way and let go the starter will turn and keep on turning without any further key pressure?

Curiouser and curiouser!
That ranks alongside the time I found out that holding down the key lock pad made the windows close too (from this site actually).

Thanks for the replies.
I feel better knowing roughly what it is.
