Hello All,

I "was" a happy owner of a Mercedes GLE 2018 250d 4matic. I purchased the car from a Mercedes dealer in November 2021 with 1 year warranty and full MB service. I have performed 2 further oil changes during my ownership and driven the car mainly for long trips to Europe.

The car has 22,000 miles on the clock and when purchased around 9,000

Yesterday I noticed not 1 but 2 oil leaks in the engine bay (nothing on the floor). One is coming from the turbo (right of the car) and the other from the main seal (left of the car). My mechanic (not MB specialist) had a look yesterday and confirmed its a engine out job for the main seal, no need to do it now as the leaks are minor at the moment.

Unfortunately warranty expired in November 2022....

Now, considering the age of the car, 20K miles and full MB service I'm really surprised and disappointed. Reading various forums I now understand that these leaks seem quite common. As this engine has been around for so much time really can't understand how MB hasn't managed to address these issues.

Now what should I do? I booked a inspection with MB west London just to be sure of my mechanic findings. Is this the right thing to do? Any chance being a known issue MB will agree to do the job although out of warranty?

Anyone with similar issues with this type of engine (OM651 engine)?

Had an oil leak in my 2014 ML250 at 47K miles. Looking back at invoice it was at back of engine above gearbox. Chain tensioner & sealing ring. Parts were @£80 + £300 labour from specialist. Lots o dismantling but thankfully no engine out :( Is it really an engine out job ?

thanks Chris,

my main leak that concerns me (not the turbo one) is as per attached photo highlighted in yellow (not sure the name of that seal?). At the moment still minor but concerning for the future trips. For this leak my mechanic stated engine out!

Any thoughts?

photos as attached. First 2 photos are from the driver side. All clean now but the turbo was leaking quite a bit. Last 2 photos passenger side seal leaking on the brown/beige cover (not sure the name of that item)

Its certainly not an engine out job. It is fiddly but doable. It is a common area to get a slight sweat in that area. Its an air intake pipe with a throttle flap. There are two seals on the flap/pipe. If there is a slight weep there then I would not worry.

Thats not a leak I would worry about. I wouldn't even call it a leak. Its a slight sweat and perfectly normal.

thanks! Just worried that oil ended up on the beige plastic cover which seems not just a sweat?

Its absolutely fine. Do not worry. That a rubber heat shield cap on top of the engine mount. Its designed to shield.
