Sorry if this has been asked before but I have just had a dicey drive home in the first half reasonable snow we have had since getting my GLE 250d AMG in Sept 16. When I stopped on my lightly sloping driveway the car started sliding even with the handbrake on. Checked tyres and to my surprise are nearly down to the wear indicators on the front and not much better on the rears. My previous car an E350d AMG did 30,000 miles on original tyres, I have driven 11,000 on these and am a steady driver. Does this wear sound normal? Thank you.

That sounds a bit too much, we make ours last a lot longer, 20-25,000 miles. Is the wear even across each tyre, and the same across all tyres?

PS The car sliding has little to do with your summer tyres being worn. It's more to do with parking on snow/ice, on an incline in a heavy car's fitted with summer tyres. If you're parked on ice, then winter tyres would barely help, if at all. But parked on snow, they'd help a lot.

All is fine with even tyre wear, tracking and alignment etc. I just wondered if the heavy wear was normal with the 4matic system.

The surface was fresh fallen slushy snow, I reversed on to my drive with the front pointing downhill. Given handbrake only locks rear wheels I might have been better going on forwards.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Well I would suggest you look at Nexen Suv 4 for you next tyres, not too expensive and seem to wear very well.as regard sliding on the ice on a slope well I suppose that had to happen,at least you now know that the shovel has to come out and clear a patch so you can park safely.

The GLE is a heavy vehicle with a higher than average centre of gravity. It will also have a stability control system which involves the selective braking of each wheel independent of driver input. If driven "brisky" ;) I would venture that 11-12k might not be outwith any expected wear profile. If cold weather is a concern you might look at all-weather tyres when you come to change.

Thanks. I put all season tyres on an X5 I had and it never snowed while I put up with extra tyre noise. Bought wife an xDrive 4 series 3 winters ago and it’s never seen snow. It’s like taking a brolly out and then it never rains!

In that case, get the winters fitted, and we'll have a whip round to help cover the cost. More mild winters ahead! :D

Sorry I should say, we have the same model but with a different engine and the first set of tyres were changed prematurely at 17,000 miles. Looking at the wear since then and over the course of another 14,000 miles, we're on track to get 20-25,000 miles out the second set, which is very very similar to the previous generation models we have owned over the years. Both sets are Pirelli PZero, which many don't like, but they work well on our cars.

Which brand and size are they?
