Glow Plug Light Issue

Hi everyone,

Around 6 months ago, My CLS's glow plug light would intermittently illuminate, so at that time, all the glow plugs and the glow plug relay were replaced. This resolved the issue.

However, for the past few days the glow plug light has stated to intermittently illuminate again. I was wondering what the issue could be?

Many thanks in advance.

If the light only comes on immediately after starting and goes off after a minute or two it's normally a failed plug (or plugs). If the light comes on randomly while driving it's normally the relay. But as above getting the codes read will tell you.

If your CLS has the OM642 V6 the relay was unavailable from MB (with no ETA) when I needed one for our Vito recently. That had a full house - 2 failed plugs (one of which had to be drilled out), failed relay, and blown 'mega fuse' (a special 225A fuse for the glowplug circuit).

I think I might possibly have a relay - I can't remember - from when I did mine previously.

Unfortunately, I can't check right now, as I'm in A&E following on from excruciating pain that woke me this morning.

Ball ache ?

My local indi rang round the parts depts. of all the local dealerships and managed to find a relay that had been ordered in for a job previously and never used. AFAIK they've been unavailable from MB for some time now.

I had a cold start issue where engine would crank loads before starting with a puff of smoke, no fault was indicated glow plug light would illuminate for a couple seconds and then go off also no glow plug light whilst driving. On advice from forum members I replaced the glow plug relay and problem solved. The original relay wasn't that old either but it was a beru unit from Auto doc, this time I have fitted the latest mb original part as these relays/part numbers have been changed a few times over the years.
