Hi all,hope you've had a good Christmas.

I took my car to an indie at the beginning of December for the test as the car has been displaying the dreaded contamination symptoms. I'm still waiting for the results!!!(something about them not having the crystals) but am pretty certain the transmission is contaminated...My question is...Should this test show how much coolant is in the transmission??

Indie says all the test says is yes it's contaminated or no it's not,but I'm sure I've read or heard somewhere that the test tells you how much contamination there is..Therefore giving you an idea of the extent of damage done and whether to flush the ATF and drain the TC or to possibly have the whole transmission rebuilt....
Any advice would be much appreciated

Why would you ha e the transmission rebuilt if operation is normal?

Complete flush should be fine after minor contamination.

If major coolant has sat in the box for extending periods then you should be suffering serious problems.

Thanks v12.. The problem is I don't know how contaminated it is and am not sure how you can tell...I spoke with a garage who specialise in this type of problem and I have been quoted quite highly...They say once the coolant is in the transmission then the whole lot needs rebuilding...including TC,new electro plates etc..
Is there a way of working out how contaminated it is??

The main problem I have is the transmission seems to slip slightly when in both auto and manual.

Book an appointment with Ollie at PCS, he is a long standing forum supporter and a very highly regarded independent. He offers a full drain of gearbox and torque convertor for around £200 on the 5 speed gearbox, he will also be able to offer you expert advice as to the options you have.:thumb:

Emailed PCS before Xmas. Just waiting for a reply[/QUOTE

It will be worth the wait!

They will be able to give you clear advice on the problem and the best options, hopefully a change of fluid and filter and all will be well!

I've got a feeling it's going to take more than a flush and drain...fingers crossed though

You'll also have to remedy the source of the contamination if it hasn't been addressed already i.e. the radiator.

Yes it's fitted with the valeo rad. Have seen a behr rad on ebay so I'll be getting that fitted the same time as the flush is done

Some good news....Finally after 3weeks waiting, mercedes indie called me today saying no glyco contamination....
Nissens rad will be fitted in couple weeks then off to see Ollie towards the end of the month....

Precautionary measure. Too many stories of valeo rads failing after 100k
Change your radiator or split the cooling system of your transmission by adding one more rad just for it. I have done this and I m glad I did it.

I heard something about this but how does it work?? I'm guessing its a smaller rad but where does it go??
Is it more or less expensive compared to replacement rad??

Ok, so have had a little read up and it seems you fit a small transmission oil cooler infront of the existing rad....

Then cut some pipes, connect some more pipes and you're good to go:D

Definitely something to look into

Theres a few types out there so dont get lured into a nice looking "meaty" one :)

Some are too big for the job as for normal performance you only need one that's going to give optimum temperature performance and not "over cool" the gear box oil.

The Black one in these pics is just right for normal driving.

Do you have an idea where I can pick one up from??Looking on ebay it seems most are shipped in from china:crazy:
