Hi all am new - going to look at a 2000 A140 today.

Any hints and tips for me?

My trusty 206 has blown the head so need a new vehicle, love the look of the A-class, but is there anything I need to be aware of?

This may not be an affordable solution for you - but most people would say do not go for a W168 A Class (pre 2005) which had many issues. The replacement W169 (2005 onwards) is a much better and hugely more reliable car.

+1 The older one really is a bad example of a mercedes. I think you'll be left with a poor impression.

I'd suggest if the newer one is off limits, you might want to skip the idea all together.

I would go for the W169 every time. I have not owned the older (168) version myself but I know someone who did and they were very unhappy with it. My 2006 A200CDI was a great little car, however, and I kept it for almost 5 years. The only problem was rust on the door seams but Merc put that right for free even though the car was five years old.

Well I went to look at it and it was pure rotten round the wheel arches :( back to the drawing board....
