Goodwood Festival of Speed - CANCELLED - due to high winds

It's a little warm! We’re off to Skiathos tomorrow to our house for a couple of weeks so we’ve got a 4.5hr drive across mainland Greece and then a 2hr ferry ride.
It’ll feel cooler there because it gets a decent breeze.
It's tough being a Ginger Ninja Empty Nester, I have to travel when it's cooler and cheaper.
I went to Greece in August once. Too hot for me. I had to get up early, take a siesta after lunch, and stay up late drinking ....
Have a great trip

38° earlier here.

LOL.....makes you wonder how any of us are alive after all the those years of storms and windy days at shows, race meets and festivals over all those years!! Everyone's gone soft!
Not really a case of Everyone going soft. It’s merely learning to minimise risk based on the past.

As said, many fairly fragile temporary structures and marquees that may not withstand the forecast/predicted gales. Cancelling is gamble worth taking to avoid the possibility of multiple injuries or even a loss of life.

We all wear seat belts ‘just in case’. 😊

Looks like the weather got it wrong and it could have gone ahead (no doubt Goodwood will sue the met office in this day and age!!!) its been mostly sunny all day with average wind speed not exceeding 26mph and highest recorded gust being around 44mph in the Chichester area according to the met and now dying down. Never mind.

To be fair, it wasn't about average wind speed, it was about "gusts up to 50mph." A "gust of 50mph" can bring down power lines and trees.

It'll be interesting to see if Goodwood did lose any temporary buildings and hoardings. Time will tell.

And those gusts aren't at all predictable. I watch rowing on the Tideway, and it can get very lively when they get "gusts up to" 40mph.

With a "Head of the River race," you can be OK one moment and then suddenly you've got several Eights frantically pulling into the side trying not to sink from inondation.

But hey, if you think that's a waste of money, you should have seen the $500 billion we wasted globally on the Y2k bug.

Frankly I don’t think ‘weather’ got it wrong. I think they were spot on. Extremely windy in powerful gusts this afternoon and difficult to walk against if you are carrying anything and it’s not over yet. I wouldn’t want to be near a marquee or anything temporary.

Marquees and temporary buildings full of mains cabling and expensive kit....

It's been fairly windy locally. I'm about 20 miles by road from Goodwood & I guess c. 15 miles in a straight line. A number of branches like this have been blown down in my garden. My Flatcoat retriever has enjoyed pulling them round the garden, usually away from the pit where I want to burn them in a few weeks!

We almost got a Flatcoat before we chose a Black Lab.
Fabulous woofers.

I’d rather people criticise me for keeping people safe, than from causing someone harm. I suspect the organisers felt the same.

We’re almost 200 miles North, so not terribly relevant as you’d expect the weather to be different to Goodwood. However it’s been windy here. There are green leaves covering the ground and there are branches as thick as a couple of inches in the roads.

We have an “outdoor” carpet mat (don’t ask, it’s Mrs D’a idea) beneath an outdoor lounge set on a wooden deck (all at ground level). The wind has lifted the mat sufficiently to move the the whole lot more than a foot from its original position!

Flat as glass.

Paxos island on the south of Corfu.
Hey Darrell, you’re the man in the know on Greece - where’s a good, quiet place to go snorkelling and a bit of walking?

I took the gazebo down that I have covering the Alfa just in case as we’re away so couldn’t keep an eye on it. Mine has suspension built in so it can handle quite high winds but it’s pretty scary being next to it when it’s blowing, even though it’s bolted down. I guess there’s also the case of protecting traders stock. If you image rain being blown into your pop up stall, you could easily end up making a huge loss.

Any of the islands tbh.
All of them have dive schools if you fancy taking it one step further.

Dunno, by the angle of that pic, the sea is pretty rough there too 😁
Par for the course - have you seen the angle of some of the car pics he takes? ;)
