Hard wire a Pogo Alert in CLS 500

I have purchased a Pogo Alert GPS/laser camera detector to use in my CLS 500, and I would prefer to hard-wire it into the ignition, to avoid external cable running to the cigar lighter.
Mercedes have quoted c. 2-3 hours for this job - stating that it requires undoing the dashboard etc to do a proper job (and obviously at their high labour rates that is big bucks).
Several other self-acclaimed in-car electronics companies have quoted c. half an hour to do the job - at much lower hourly rates, and hence would be significantly cheaper.
Does anybody experience of this, to know whether MB are just bull-****ting, or whether it really is best to pay a huge sum for this job.
Thanks.

Where are you planning to mount it?

Oh welcome to the forum...... I am sure an electrical specialist will be along soonto answer your question..:bannana:

The easiest live feed can be taken from the headlamp switch and that is an all time live.

An ign switch live can be taken from the cigar lighter socket, but from the back side and would need the center console removing to do this.

If you use a non MB firm to do this you must find out how they will do it and where they will take the live feed from

I'd go with the lighter also, would probably use new contacts and a connector since i prefer that to those little connectors you can buy that punch into the insulation.

And it just happens to be a warranty friendly way to mod also.

I feel ill when I see cut wires, as you san Dan,, no need for it

ive done it a few times and should take someone no more than 45 mins to do it from start to finish.

n.b Remember to buy the hard wire kit as the pogo alert isnt 12v!

I know the feeling, in my current car i needed to make a lot of wiring modifications I've lost count of exactly how many connections needed to be made but i do know that out of all the connectors fitted only 2 are not MB produced because i needed high current capacity contacts with only a small connector and MB did not produce one small enough.

Also it's total solder joint count is 3 all located on a single harness from a temp sensor to a data logger.

If i can make a connection by replacing a contact spring on either the start or end of a harness then thats what i do otherwise if i have no choice but to make a cable cut i always join it with an MB connector and to the procedure in WIS, i see no point in taking chances.
