Hello to everyone. I live in Stoke Poges in Bucks and have been driving an Indian built 2001 registered W124 E220 saloon for nearly a year now.
There’s a bit of a story as to how I ended up with this car, so if you’re sitting comfortably…
My Dad bought this E220 in mid 2005, as at the age of 74, he was having trouble getting in and out of his 190D. Plus, I think he secretly fancied a nicer Merc!
Anyway, he had a ‘routine’ hip operation in mid 2007, and suffered a stroke whilst under general anaesthetic. In the following months his health rapidly deteriorated, and six months later, with my Mum no longer able to look after him, he had to go into a home. The decline in his overall health continued.
I inherited my Dad’s E220 when he passed away in November 2008.
I was driving a BMW E34 Touring at the time which offered more space for a family of four. So, as it held no serious value, and feeling a slight attachment to it, Dad’s Mercedes continued to sit in the garage. For over 4 years. In that time it was used for a couple of months and very infrequently driven up and down the drive.
Until Feb 2012. Approaching 195,000 miles, my BMW’s engine blew up – write off.
I got the E220 out of the garage, literally brushed the dust and cobwebs from it, checked the fluids, and took it for an MOT. It passed with 2 small advisories.
I’ve now been driving it for a year and all I’ve had to do is change the clutch/brake fluid and a headlight bulb. And I treated it to 4 new tyres.
If ever a car can win your affections, this one has. Despite its now somewhat dated styling and thirst for fuel (I only seem to get about 30mpg out of it) I think this E220 will be around for sometime.
Now I really must get it serviced!
Thanks for reading,
Nevil.
