2006 class C 220 CDI W 203 Diesel. Help, Engine won't start seems to spin with no compression. Just cleaned E G R valve no other issues. Any thoughts?

Probably not a compression issue unless you've verified with a compression test.

Campbelt or chain snapping is a common course of a fast spin with no compression.

Starter not engaging with the ring gear, therefore, the starter is just spinning away, with no resistance, maybe.

Thanks for your help, I guess step 1 is to have someone do a proper diagnostic. The problem for me is to find that garage or someone.
Will keep you posted

Is it possible that some of the gunk from cleaning the EGR found its way to the valves and is propping them open? If so, the valve clearances will have closed up so relatively easy to confirm or deny.

Valve clearances?.....is it 1979? Hydraulic tappets would take up any extra clearance. But debris in the valves seems unlikely especially on more than one or two valves.

Thanks, yes this is what I think also. If the head needs to come off I am wondering what cost I am setting my self up for? Take care.

If it is the case - a leak down compression test would help in ascertaining this - then maybe it will be possible to clean the valve/seats with the head in situ but with manifolds removed. If removing the manifolds to remove the head, there's maybe an opportunity to pursue that before committing to head removal.

Excellent, My mecano. is coming on Tuesday and I will run this buy him. Just a last thought. My injectors & glow plugs are suffering (300 000 km.) Do you think I should use this opportunity to change them also? Thanks

You were there during the EGR cleaning so are best placed to judge if debris made it the valves. Your responses so far suggest to me it is possible. There are other suggestions and a rebuttal to this theory so there is no absolute certainty. Neither is it certain the valves can be accessed well enough via the ports with the manifolds removed. You'll only really know when you get there, but that (after detecting leakage past the valves - and only then - which may involve manifold removal anyway) is the path I'd pursue.

I'm not sufficiently versed in the life of diesel components so others can better advise but if you feel they are ripe for replacement and it's easier done during whatever is required to remedy your first problem, for sure consider changing them.

Unlikely.....I would be one cylinder tops and most likely would have been blown away or burned anyway. It would also still probably try and start on the other cylinders. Have you spun her over and had someone look to see if the cams etc are moving.
