HELP!! - scratch remover advice

I am totally p****d off and really would appreciate some assistance. I thought I'd wash my ML 350 Inspiration and was about to apply the sponge to the bodywork when I held back, something wasnt right. It took my brain a while to register but someone had grazed the whole side of the car. From the front passenger door to the back end there was a line going all the way through (not too sure how thats happened).

It's not some idiot who has keyed it but more like some absoulte t****r who can't drive to save his life. There doesnt appear to be a dent nor does it appear to have gone through the bodywork but after half an hour rubbing away with some 'turtle wax' scratch remover, i've only manged to remove about a quarter of it.

I hardly drive the car, thats what makes it more frustrating - do any of you guys have some advice on any products which might do the trick? The bodywork is black in colour and I am desperate to sort this out as it does my head in when I look at it and I only wished it had happened in my presence because I would have dealt with the muppet accordingly!!!

As usual I would really appreciate your help, here's hoping someone has the answer to my headache.

Regards
A

First I would try a coloured wax. These can be obtained in Halfords etc. Being a non-metallic, it might cover quite well, and with further applications dissappear completely. If that doesnt work try either Haze remover or T-cut (but be careful not to cut away too much).
And if that doesnt work, there are specialist companies that do scratch cover work. I have seen this done and it really does work. I think they normally charge around £40 for a small scratch/blemish. Yours sounds like more.

Are you sure it was malicous damage?
These side scratches can sometimes be done by a thorny twig or a piece of wire poking out of a bush down a narrow country lane. Easy done, specially in the dark.

take it to a friendly bodyshop, ask if they will try and polish out what they can for you.

Turtle wax does not have the right action. marks from hedgerows will come out with a light Tcut, water it down a touch if you like.

I've just removed a fairly heavy scratch / scuff from my rear side bumper with T cut...use a little bit on a rag keep removing and trying again...if it was all along the side of my car I might be more reluctant to use T cut and use Maguires Xscratch (I think thats what its called) or Autoglym paint renovater both less abrasive than T cut...

This is more a question than a statement.

Can you run your fingernail over the scratch and feel it? If so then I would suggest you stop and get professional advice?

Are most paints two coats? Inother words is there a clear top coat and then a colour?

Be careful you do not start removing either the clear coat or perish the thought the base coat. You could try a touch-up paint and then poilsh out most of it, but if it looks bad, then I would get professional advice.

Good luck
John

I would recommend mcguires scratch x (worked on some of mine..) Not sure if i have the name right but it may be the same as the earlier poster was referring to.

Do they actually work? How about on Metallic and is it permanent or just washed away in the next jetwash? I ask because my black obsidian has about a 1000 minor chips on the left corner of the bumper ... I guess the previous owner drive past very fast when gritting was in progress or something similar. Looking for something to fix it and pen and brush may not be a solution coz many chips are just too small. Ill post another post for this  ;)

I have since discovered these coloured waxes do not offer a permanant solution and fade after a few washes.
Might help in the selling process, but would that be classed as dishonesty?
It seems the best way to tackle damage as you describe is to get the professionals in.
