"Hold" shown when selecting gear after start

<div class="bbWrapper">Recently my 2010 CLS 350CDi has shown a reluctance to pull away initially after starting when drive or reverse is selected after it has been sitting for a few days. Even with 2500 rpm it hardly moves. Yesterday when I started it &amp; selected reverse I noticed &quot;HOLD&quot; pop up in the mileage readout briefly...any ideas?<br /> Once moving the reluctance to pull away disappears...I have no idea whats causing it as everything is fine after.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Thanks for the suggestion but I hardly ever use the parking brake &amp; if I do if it sticks the red Brake Warning illuminates....<br /> <br /> I wondering if there is the possibility of a small fluid leak onto the torque convertor that initially effects in the same manner that a fluid leak on a clutch plate causes clutch slip...is that possible?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">The torque converter is a fluid 'clutch' nothing can leak 'on' to it and make it slip, they don't work that way. How many miles does it have on it and has the transmission been serviced ?</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Cars of recent vintage have a Electronic brake HOLD facility. After coming to halt by applying the brake pedal - throttle off , if you re-apply the brakes by pressing the braking pedal sharply in what might be described as a short stabbing action the car's braking system will apply the brakes on all 4 wheels [ HOLD displayed on dash] until the accelerator pedal is applied again when they will be released. For this to work seamlessly the brake calipers have to work freely without any &quot;stiction&quot; so one or more of the calipers may be jamming. Since this system relies on signals from switches/sensors on the brake and accelerator pedals one of them may have a fault which might be revealed by reading the fault codes?</div>
 
<div class="bbWrapper">Back to basics. You say this happens after the car has been parked up for a few days. Sounds like your brakes are binding. So you come to a stop on the brakes and hold onto the brakes while you stick it in park. Pads are left in contact with discs and don't retract which causes binding. Problem is non-existant in dry weather but frequent when wet or humid.</div>
 
<div class="bbWrapper">I discovered the HOLD function the other day for the first time after my wife first drove my car, then replicated it myself.<br /> <br /> if you really push the brake pedal, it should pop up. It basically holds you stationary but in drive until you press the accelerator down again. Not sure where i would use it personally unless in really bad traffic but would still be hovering over the brake pedal myself in case of failure.<br /> <br /> Hope this helps, was a surprise to me the first time too!<br /> <br /> Edit : just seen the revs you have to get to in order to release, defo sounds like something’s sticking as mines just like pulling away from a hill start for example</div>

First thing I would do with this car is get the gearbox fully serviced.</div>

I managed to get the &quot;HOLD&quot; message to enunciate again as Jack5255 &amp; can confirm this is not at all related to the drive issue. <br /> <br /> Today having left the car for 48 hrs I started it, to ensure the brakes weren't sticking I operated them a few times, I selected revers &amp; all seemed fine. When I went into Drive to pull away there was no urgency &amp; again the car hardly moved. I got going &amp; stopped 50 m down the road to try again &amp; all was fine. I am going to get the filter &amp; gearbox oil changed but I'm not sure thats where the issue is. If anyone else has any ideas or a similar experience your thoughts appreciated.<br /> <br /> Thanks again</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">In the original post you say the sluggishness exists whether in Drive or Reverse, and in your latest post you say Reverse is fine and Drive is sluggish. It would be beneficial to establish whether this affects both or just the one.</div>
 
<div class="bbWrapper">Well in a rush this morning but read the first two posts,owners should use the parking/hand brake,hitting the end of the stalk to put the prawl into the box allows the hand brake mechanism to basically sieze up,hence the post if I do that I get a brake message on the dash.</div>

<div class="bbWrapper">Just back from a few days away on business &amp; the started the car &amp; maneuvering in the car park all was fine in both Drive &amp; Reverse. When I selected drive to pull away again there was hardly any drive but the engine was revving freely...got moving &amp; again it was fine.<br /> <br /> I'm absolutely sure its not related to the brakes as I have noticed if I leave the car with the parking brake on &amp; it sticks there is a definite thump &amp; noise as it releases. Going to the gearbox serviced &amp; see if that shows up anything. On a different forum in the US there was a suggestion there is a relief valve on the gearbox &amp; if that sticks then the gearbox is sluggish..anyone heard that before?<br /> <br /> Thanks again for all your inputs.</div>
