Hopefully soon to be CL500 owner

Hi All

I've fallen in love with the CL500 (2007 onwards) and have just been given the green light for the missus to get one (sad isn't it!)

I'm new to MB ownership so have some daft questions:

What is the difference between W216 and C216?
Am I right to assume that if the seats have the cooling function then they also have the massage function?
Is there any way to tell from pictures if the car has Distronic?

I have my eye on 3 motors. Any other buying advice you have would be greatfully appreciated! Anything I should look for on the test drive?

1st and 3rd car have Distronic... You can tell by the plastic star on the front grill, it's there to protect the radar sensor.

I don't know about the 216, but both my seats have the cooling function...but only the driver's has massage.

I had one, 2010 Amg kit fully loaded every extra you can imagine, it only had 2k miles when I got it. I had it 5 years best car I've had tbh. Should of kept it.

MB refer to all their cars as W regardless of actual bodystyle. So the chassis number will be W216........ but C216 denotes the bodystyle - which is coupe.

Mine has cooling but no massage function.

I would ensure there are no funny noises and the raise button near the speedo actually raises the car!

Personally, I wouldn't take on one of these without a decent inde giving it the once over - overly-complicated cars with plenty to go wrong!

You will be able to add yourself to the exciting C216 owners thread, which is quite uneventful so far...!

Many thanks! Some very useful tips here - especially around the radar badge and the raising/ lowering button!

I'm pleased that I can't find many posts from existing owners as it does suggest they don't suffer many problems. I hope that's the case anyway- I've bought my fair share of lemons!!

Out of interest. Of all the extras on the car, what would you consider a must have item? I love a gadget so would really like the night vision... distronic and massage seats would be great too. Anything else?

When I was looking, I didn't see many with any of these - mine doesn't have them although I don't need any of them.

I wanted comfort seats, Karman Hardon, AMG bodykit and 20" wheels and seat cooling...

I've not seen many S W221s with NV either.

Or maybe I'm not looking hard enough!

One thing I love on mine is the 3 choice interior ambient lighting.

I am on blue at the moment.

It's not as bright as some of the newer stuff - more subtle but nice when it gets a bit dark to see it...

Keyless Go and the electric boot, looks like the 3rd car has both. Try them out on your test drive, makes the car extra special because of the gadgets

I am a gadget person too.

Yes, mine has the fully electric boot.

Open with key, press button to close.

Within the car - you can open and close it.

Not a huge benefit to me but the former is useful when you lift out a chunky parcel to send and you want to close the boot.

I would suggest that you look for one with AMG body kit and wheels makes a lot of difference to the looks. I have night vision on my S500, once the novelty wears off you will not bother with it, if anything it is a distraction same as TV. Massage seat ar good if you suffer back problems.

Agreed. The ones without AMG kit look so different, I'm not sure I would have bothered if the kit wasn't an option.
