Hi

My hotmail account has been compromised, i dont know how, since i hardly ever use it.

Is there are known breach of hotmail and what should I do next?

Many thanks

Tan

I suppose the most obvious one is to change your password. And use something that cannot be guessed easily. Use a combination of random letters and numbers in both lower and upper case.

Cases of compromised email accounts usually happen when passwords are shared by other websites - or replying to a phishing email can do it as well.

Depends on what you mean by compromised
If you have a reasonably secure password it is unlikely that you have been the victim of a random attack

I had my hotmail account compromised by my ex when we were going through a particularly unpeasant stage of our divorce. She simply asked to reset the password and given that we were married, was able to easily answer the 'security' question (I think it was 'favourite pet's name' or something). Most of the standard questions are pretty easy for even a casual acquaintance to guess let alone a vindictive significant other.

The answer is to pick a random answer to the security q's... ...providing you can remember what it was :(

Create another hotmail account, use the contact details on one of the Hotmail pages and message them from the new account.

A few years ago at college, someone managed to change my passwords. Hotmail asked me a series of questions such as how old the account was, to list the people in the address book, and name some of the emails/folders in the account. I also included the IP address that 90% of the time was used to access the account.

After about a week or so I had it back :)

Forget about Hotmail and use Gmail - powered by Google - million times better than Hotmail

Well you get far more storage space...I have been given 7gb free, you can always log in, unlike hotmail, and you can send emails up to the size of 20mb, which means very large attachments, and no banner type advertising.
