How much attention do you get in the SL63?

In the days of bumper stickers, I recall seeing a RR with a sticker that said “F@£k the poor”. I was poor but agreed with his sentiment then and still do.

Who cares what others think!?

Buy the car you like.

Do you care about your clients’ views? Do they care about your motor?

What are they driving? Would your flash car put them off?

As a 30 year I started work with a senior partner of one of the big four consultancies and we had to rock up at a Dorset Military procurement site for a presentation on some new work. In salary terms I would have been just on six figures today, while he would be approaching seven.

I was in a five year old 3 series, he a tired little Citroen saloon. It surprised me - I didn’t get it - but he was in the right car for the situation. Was it really the station hack? Probably. We were presenting a significant cost reduction proposal to people that weren’t commercial. It was horses for courses.

What do you do for a living? Most clients would see it as a positive thing. It’s like the builders that have immaculate vans, rather employ them for the work than one that has an old dirty crappy van - it will be reflected in their work.

That’s the theory anyway.

I draw plans for house extensions. Majority of projects are for normal people living in 3 bed semis who want a bigger kitchen or an extra bedroom. I don't do large projects or large houses. I don't need to look poor, just not overly flash. I expect turning up in a nice car will help work but my main question was how loud is the SL63. If they can hear me pulling in from the other side of their house that is going to draw a lot of attention to my flash car.

You're overthinking this. Something which I've suffered from over the years.

Some will care, some won't. You're pre-empting what you think their perception will be to a degree that it's effecting your personal choices.

I don't claim to have reached the nirvana of not caring what people think about me. As I've got older though it's slipped alot further down the list of things I worry about.

Buy what you want, enjoy it and carry on with life. Some people will simply judge you no matter which SL you buy.

If someone decides to not do business with you based on what car you drive, then perhaps they are not worthy of your time.. All the standard non-tinkered with SL63's meet noise regs, so it should not be that loud at low speeds , it should not matter to anyone what car you drive.. As a car person I would be impressed by someone who drives what they want to for business.. and it would make your visit more memorable, plus you are not going to be sitting on their driveway revving the engine, so I doubt the sound would cause any real difference.. My SL55 AMG is very subtle... a gentle burble when driven sensibly... it still turns heads wherever I go, because V8 engines cars are still quite unusual to see/hear in the UK... it also roars when driven hard... 😁
If it was me I would get the car you like... because YOU want it... and forget what anyone else thinks.. they are free to spend their own money on what they want, and you on yours... and to drive a special car every day will take the boredom out of driving, that driving an ordinary car brings.

Your money.. your choice.

You have to ask yourself, just why would you turning up in noisier than average car, have any bearing whatsoever on the person/people you are drawing plans up for? You are overthinking this to the extreme. As others have said (and I agree with), I would see the car as a sign of success and if you turned up in an SL63 to my house at least, i'd see it as a sign of good taste :)

I have never worried what people think of my car, in fact the last time I worried what anyone else thought of me (for any reason) was about 30 years ago when I was still in school.

Buy the car you want - with respect, your customers really won't give a monkey's - unless they are fellow car nuts.

Your prospective clients being asked by their neighbours: 'Who's the bell-end in the SHOUTY Merc?' won't hurt your business prospects at all - why would it?...
I get away with running a V8 without any aggro from my customers because one, it isn't loud shouty, two, there's more interest in a rare American vehicle than another ubiquitous European car.
I could suggest a Mustang - but ten pages will ensue of 'Mustang aint a Mercedes' and 90% of its core content will (but disguised) relate to - image. Back to where we started then - the thing you're trying to avoid.

Hey, YOLO! Bankruptcies are limitless... Don't throw your business down the pan with a shouty wide-boy footballer's car. Find something interesting and it being talked about (favourably) will enhance - not inhibit your business prospects. If not that - keep it bland/neutral.

A grey debadged SL63 maybe a good compromise.

Don't compromise and follow your heart... after all, (performance) car purchase has very little to do with rational :).

Enjoy it!

One (belated) thought: the 4.7tt is quite tuneable so you could get one and have it tuned to well above E500 level anyway.

Most people have no interest in cars & do not know or care what you drive. Probably think your exhaust is knackered & needing replaced.
My wife has no interest in cars, expensive or cheap as long as they take her to where she is going. She could not tell you what make of cars we have & if I take her to a garage, she will not even bother getting into a car & just says, if you like it, buy it.

Sl500 every time. The 4.7tt is a very understressed engine, a 500 quid remap gives you all the urgency of the AMG with 9 tenths of the performance. Blow the price difference on a cracking family holiday !!! Win win in my book  :banana:

That's what I did.......

If you're already turning up in a 911 (possibly the world's most recognised sports car) and you're happy with your business levels then go for the SL63. Life is way too short....

All my neighbours with their lecy euro boxes twitch their curtains ever time i fire up my 22 year old SL320 and drop the roof 😇
They’d do the same if your road was lined with more interesting and exotic cars. A maturing SL is always something special.

The latest SL seems like a big step away from the traditional SL recipe but over time I think it will become similarly timeless foo.
