I have a s500 2003 model, how can i get my phone to connect to the system and use with the steering button and also be able to to connect my phone and stream music to it, keeping the merc system intact?

You can buy a bluetooth puck (HFP adapter) to place in the phone holder in the armrest. This is only for the phone and will not allow music steaming.

Not wishing to diss the W220's twenty year old Comand module / system...

I'd argue that you should either just buy yourself a bluetooth headset, and use SIRI, or its equivalent.

Or look at a complete £700+ replacement of Comand, with a brand new bluetooth, SatNav, Music streaming, handsfree direct dialling module, maybe even CarPlay, if you're an Iphone user. Note that it's a complicated installation, not a simple home job.

Iv'e been looking at android auto - has anyone put this into their car. does it work with all the speakers. I have read some aftermarket products don't connect to all the speakers etc..

I have.

But it is involved because the speaker connections are in the boot. This is my 215...but similar install for a 220:

Android install in a W215

are you able to use the steering controls?
and does reverse camera come with andorid auto? does it auto switch when you reverse?
how good is the sat nav?
any downsides?

Steering controls for volume and changing stations. No display in the speedo cluster.

Sat nav is an app and there are many to choose from but it is ready installed with igo which is not only very good, but you no longer have to buy expensive update cds or dvds.

For the journeys that matter | iGO navigation

The camera can be ordered at the same time. And it auto switches when reverse is selected.

No downsides compared with the Comand system I sold. But, as with everything, it would be better if the screen wasn't so low down...but that's the way they were 12 years ago.

did you mean steering controls cant be used?

does reverse parking have guidelines on the screen?

They CAN be used.

Reversing does have guide lines...but not the moving type. To be honest the camera is a bit of fun, I don't find it that useful compared to mirrors and sensors.

did you have to drill holes in bumper or was it placed neatly underneath somehow?

im just spending alot of money replacing the steering wheel buttons....

I drilled a hole in the centre of the bumper because of the way the wiring to the boot lid is in these cars. It looks like a middle parking sensor.

how visible is this? my car is all white, if all reverse cameras are like this, don't think i will ever fit one in.

ive been reading some threads and i cannot seem to understand the meaning of Bose and what makes the optical fibre cables special.

if i was to fit in after market whether is android auto, pioneer, kenwood. what I am after is to be able to connect mobile for calls etc, and stream. everything else is extra. alot of people talk about amps and speakers and quality of car amp and new amp etc..

if i was to take a pioneer one, will it not work with the all the speaker, provide same quality etc. how does optic fibre come into this?

Your head unit is connected to everything in the back of the car by a fiber optic cable. All the speaker connections etc are made in the boot. An android headunit will have a built in amp and you can use this to drive the speakers, but you will get a bigger sound with a separate amp in the boot which is what you have if you have a Bose system. So, to connect a new headunit to the speakers etc you will have to run cable from the front of the car to the boot...OR you can buy a new head unit and get a fiber optic adapter to enable you to drive the speakers without running cables.

My problem was with the Bose amp so I ran cable to the boot and put in the separate amp.

Would this apply to all headunits. They wont be fibre optic compatible?

How can i tell i have bose system.

An after market unit will not be fiber optic.

That unit has it's own sat nav and could use the car's GPS antenna. Your android is a bit like a large Android phone.

is the software update-able on android auto?
