So I would really like to add bluetooth functionality to my 08 E-class and would like to know what is the best way to do this is. Do I just need to buy some sort of bluetooth adapter to plug into the UHI system?
Yes that's what I have done too. A useful device called a Viseo bought from ComandOnline fits in the box between the front seats and allows me to use my iPhone to make and receive calls exactly as if it was original equipment in my 2007 CLK. It is controlled from the steering wheel or Comand unit. As far as I know it isn't possible to connect anything else in the iPhone by Bluetooth to the Comand but if anyone knows otherwise I'd be pleased to learn how. My music, for example is still on the CD changer. Music on the phone has to be connected to the audio by a jack lead which makes it illegal to handle the phone to change tracks whilst driving so it is not a complete solution.
Thanks I'll give command online a call. I do want to be able to play music through the stereo using my phone though so hopefully there's a way of doing that.
I took a different route as whilst I wanted a hands free solution in the car I use it only very infrequently and only 3 or 4 people have the number.
I purchased (ebay) a Nokia adapter for the holder in the arm rest, a colleague at work gave me a very old and tatty but fully functional Nokia to match the adapter. Fitted PAYG GiffGaff SIM, added £10 credit and was up and running. Total cost £32 (£10 air time credit £23 for the cradle off ebay). Works well.
