C180 Sports Coupe Evolution Panorama
Hi all, I have a C180 Sports Evolution Panorama '01 (51).

My question is - it originally had a K badge stuck on it and the dealer couldn't find the details of it on the reg docs so had to remove it.

I have since been searching for sell prices and have come across numerous versions but all with the c180K.
Have I got a Kompressor? is there any way of telling?

Many thanks

Rich

Have a look in the engine bay.

Look at the toothed belt at the front of the engine.

If it goes around a compressor unit on its long path, then the answer is yes.

I will save you lifting your bonnet...........

Assuming your car is fitted with the 1.8 and not the earlier 2.0 engine, then............

The answer is yes.

Look here............... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercedes-Benz_C-Class

Thanks Vtall dave, would it not be the one above though? c180 2.0 16v

I will have a check when I get a mo - can't say I've noticed the Kompressor unit though.

NB - just seen your edit on that one! Yup it is the 2.0 I have.

You can notice it when u floor it, u will hear a faint whine accompanying your car motor while speeding up, dont keep your foot down for too long tho :)

I must have a Kompressor 190E.

All that time and I thought it was my wife.

:p

I thought all C180's after the w202 were Kompressors?

Was the W203 230K always a 1.8, out of interest? I had a courtesy example once, it was staggeringly rapid (or so I thought)

Most are. Check out the Wikipedia link for full details.

The 180K, 200K and 230K variants of the later W203 are all 1800cc.
The extra performance for each model is only down to size of compressors.

NO!

After the W202 there was only a C200K in the W203 range and just a standrad C180 but in late 2002 the C180s were then fitted with a Kompressor. In 2004 they launched a C230K in the saloon but later on scrapped the kompressor from the C230s.

MBMonkey your car is defnitely not a Kompressor.

Too add further fire to the fuel I'm under the impression the 230K, in W203-land, was only in the CL203 Sports Coupe. Any W203 C230 is actually the more modern 2.5 V6 :D.

Open the bonnet and see if you have TWO belts. If so it is a Kompressor, as a separate belt is used to drive the supercharger.

In 2004 for the saloons (W203) MB scrapped the C240 (2.6L engine) and replaced with a C230K (a 1.8L engine block tuned diffferently as in the C180K/C200K) but then did away with the Kompressor on the saloons BUT C230Ks continued for the coupes (CL203) as from the beginning.

Hi VtallDave,

I'm a bit lost here so please forgive any obvious mistake on my part!!!

I have a 2002 C230k Sports Coupe and it definately has a charger.
You say that all later W203s are 1800cc, my V5 states 2295cc. Does the actual cc remain the same after a particular year? If so, it seems to me a strange idea on MBs part to call a car a 230, 200 etc if it is actually a 1.8.

Thanks

These days badges have less to do with engine size, and more to do with relative position in the range.

Reason being it's more cost effective to produce a single engine design/size with varying power outputs, and hence a 1.8 badged as 180K, 200K and 230K.

Same with the latest 3.0 V6 diesels, which are badged 280 and 320.

BMW have done it in the past, eg 323i was a 325i for some model years, etc.

And the cherry on the cake, the 63 AMG engines are actually a 6.2, but MB choose to create a mental link to the legendary 6.3 enines.

I am no authority on the subject I assure you. Everything I know has been gleaned from the internet and forums such as this one.
Therefore, all I can say is this. If your V5 states your engine is 2295cc, then 2295cc it is. Regardless of "other" sources of information.
The more I read about Mercedes the more I have to come to the conclusion that they seem to jump from spec to spec at a whim and all manner of things vary on even the same models from the same year.
Thats as much as I can say on the subject really. Your V5 is the definative document on YOUR car.

Would it state the engine capacity om the certificate of conformance thingy-whatsit - found in the service book IIRC?
