I think ‘Q’ plates used to be used on imports, not anymore though. Only ever seen a handful, usually adorning some god awful kit car….No idea about Q plates or the processes involved? I think it probably would be a lot of work to get running gear, suspension brakes etc into an old chassis to get it working? Only guessing though
Clearly I wasn’t talking about Caterhan/Westfield/Dax or their ilk, just Google ‘God awful kit cars’ and you’ll see what mean.I thought they were still used for cars that were built from multiple donor cars?
You mean like this god awful thing

And 'extensively modified vehicles'.I thought they were still used for cars that were built from multiple donor cars?
Yeah I knew what you meant... Just pulling your leg. There are some comical replicas about!Clearly I wasn’t talking about Caterhan/Westfield/Dax or their ilk, just Google ‘God awful kit cars’ and you’ll see what mean.
I was however specifically referring to those MR2/355 reps that are kicking about…probably should have said ‘God awful replicas’
Probably relying on the MOT exemption of the 190 to never get testedAnd 'extensively modified vehicles'.
The 190 shell has been modified (floor cut out) to fit onto the 204 floor pan and such a modification is an MOT fail and requires SVA/IVA testing whereupon lacking original content (engine, steering, axles, etc are awarded points and a minimum amount of points are required to retain original registration mark) it would be allocated a Q plate.
The problem for the owner is when presented for MOT it fails because of the aforementioned chassis (shell - the 190 is a monocoque) and it is not MOT exempt because the drivetrain modifications are not those that would have been done back in the day when the car was produced or, minor improvements (eg, electronic ignition over contact breakers, radials instead of cross-plies, etc).
It isn't MOT exempt - too many changes from its standard spec for that. And, as someone mentioned, DVLA have not been informed (the minimum requirement is to inform of engine change) as still showing as diesel. When it is (informed) it will want to know more and a world of pain awaits anyone buying that car with their eyes shut.Probably relying on the MOT exemption of the 190 to never get tested
