INSTRUMENT CLUSTERS 10 YEAR GUARANTEE
Mercedes are writing to owners of 220 series S class in the US from 2000 to 2006 and giving them a ten year guarantee on the instrument cluster. Is this coming to the UK and if not does anyone know why not? Is it being applied to other models such as SL, E and C class, or is it only S class?

They had a recall recently on Instrument clusters in the US because when they fail it is a safety issue as owners don't know their speed etc. Lots about that on Benzworld.

The ten year guarantee link is: -http://forum.mbworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=172360

Safety recall

Received a recall notice from DC UK regarding instrument cluster failure on S-Class and CL-Class.

different countries have different warranties. There was a recall and that is being dealt with.

You can reverse your question and ask why the US do not have the Mobilio scheme? Different countries, different warranties.

Because they can get away with it here and not in America?

Imagine if MB had to replace all the known faulty parts on their cars for 10 years...

True but they do have other manadatory warranties that we don't have, such as exhaust systems and Cats being covered for about ten years or 100,000miles minimum.

As you say different warranties but if mandatory the manufacturer has no option.

Wow. I didn't knoow there was a recall in UK. I knew they had one in US for earlier 220 series. I have not had a recall. Do you know any more, like what years in UK are being recalled??

You may not need a replacement. I have seen the recall notice and, if I remember correctly, the factory were supplied with faulty batches of instrument clusters on 3 occasions. The factory have identified which cars were fitted with the faulty clusters and have supplied dealers with the VIN numbers. The recall doesn't mention time perios just the VIN number. I think that it affects around 6,000 cars in the UK.

Many thanks. How do I check if mine is affected please?

I have had a recall notice to day, problem is that the unit failed about eighteen months ago. Trying to get refund, have contacted dealer. Will let you know what happens.

You should be OK. In the US, Mercedes have been very good about re-imbursing people who changed before the recall came out. (see benzworld.org and MBworld.org and search the 220 series threads).

In theory, if your car is affected then you will receive a letter.

However, if you don't want to rely on the Post Office then you could try phoning the Customer Advice Centre on 00800 1 777 7777.
