Hi,

New 'intelligent' traffic lights  are being considered:

http://driving.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,22749-2365825,00.html

These will detect a red light jumper and delay lights turning green in opposite direction. Of course this will need a camera to monitor the system as without any feedback both sets of lights would always be red as everyone would just continue to jump them  .

Another nice touch is that perhaps the lights could also be used to activate the brakes of cars which the computers deem may jump the lights  .

Perhaps they should consider a system with two red lights with the second one having the words "this really does mean red" ;) on them. (I might patent this idea ;) )

Also in this article it confirms that since (non-motorist) 200 the number of traffic lights in London has increased by 20%. As we motorists know (and the Mayor doesn't) it's traffic lights that slow down traffic both due to the 'dead time' (all at red) and the constant stop/start nature that naturally occurs. We obviously need traffic lights but is this overkill?

Cheers,

Not exactly the same thing, but I noticed that some lights put up on road near me seemed to 'look' for gaps in traffic. I came across the linked document, and sure enough, that's exactly what they do. Trouble is, I now make a point of keeping up with the rest of traffic, instead of backing off a little as I would normally do approaching a green light!
