Evening,

I know we all hate this sort of post, the one with the issue which could be anything, thus I have looked into it as much as I can (without getting ones hands oily).

My E55 has had a strange problem with braking which Deiselman suggested could be (and still could be) braking friction material on the disks. Issue is that I get virbration when mid braking, light or heavy braking is fine. Also when braking at slow speed I can feel a spot where the disks slow the car quicker...... Which then brings me onto problem two which could be related.

The car shakes. Noticeable at 85mph upwards and felt through the seat (thus assume coming from the rear). Can feel a small amount through the wheel, but the seat does shake and gets worse with speeds to 100 plus. It is certainly coming from the floor pan.

All wheels have been balanced. On going through old MOT's it did point out a rear brake imbalance. On inspection it looks like the offside rear wishbone area is quite new.

Could this all point to an offside hub imbalance which is effecting braking and causing the vibration. How likely is this ?

Either way it's going to involve going to W124 or nearer specialist to get sorted. Just want to check I am thinking along the right lines.

Cheers Ian
P.S. I use AutoGlym on it if that helps :-)

I know the wheels have been balanced but have you checked to see if you have a bent rim?

It is very unlikely that you have a unbalanced hub unless it has been given a whack????

Get hold of a dti guage and remove the rear wheels and measure the run-out of the hubs without the discs on.

???

Hi Ian. could be 3 things here,
The vibration through the floor could be engine mounts worn, putting the prop shaft drive chain out of line, or the center bearing / UJ worn.

The slight imbalance on the brakes is most likely to be a disc out of true on the disc thickness, as you say it feels a kind of jerky when light braking.
this as quite common on rear brakes due to their light use.

Will check for bent rim.

I am now assuming at some point it has had a whack, thus why the plastic wishbone covers and bolts are looking quite new on that side.

Thanks for the post, will see at weekend...

The response I got from one Merc techy (young chav lad) when I suggested the UJ on my car was "I wouldn't even look at the UJ, maybe if it had 100k on the clock, so I'm not going to look at it".

Myself and Ian B Walker did have a look at the prop last time I was at W124 and it looked okay.

The car is on 103 000 miles, and rising...quickly

The 210 does not have a steering damper like the 202's 124' etc. Its integral within the rack.

I am just being a geek
