I rebuilt my main PC the other day and upgraded to Vista from XP. I took the clean sweep approach so formatted the drive.

This wasn't a problem in terms of data because all my files ("My Documents") are on my NAS device, including my My Music folder containing all my music, in the iTunes subfolder.

However, when I reinstalled iTunes, copied the My Music folder from NAS to local, and pointed the new install of iTunes at this local folder, it came up with nothing.

I managed to import, if that's the right word, the iTunes Library Library.xml file which has restored my Playlists, but I don't seem to have any of my song ratings, or number of times played information.

Is there a way to get this back? I still have the folder on my NAS device from before the rebuild so have access to all the old files if needed.

Thanks in advance!

My wife is the iTunes expert and has done this a few times but not avaialble riight now. When she can't find a solution she Googles the problem and usually finds the solution.

I always try Google first when confronted by an issue, but no luck this time. Hence my question to the learned forum community. :)

On your NAS device you should have a series of folders which are named similar to F01, F34, etc - you need to go into Itunes, and then choose Import Folder from the file menu - navigate to the folder and choose OK.

You can only do these one at a time.
It's long winded but you will get your tracks back in to the library and coupled with your playlists you should back up and running.

Thanks for the tip, but I don't see anything like those folder names on my NAS device. :( Where would they be?

You may have to revert to plan b -

connect your iPod, but set iTunes to have it as disk use for the time being.

from the Start button, choose Computer, then choose the drive (will be the name you gave your iPod on its first setup - I can't remember the exact folder name, but if you search for any files that have the extension m4a / m4u - copy all the folders that contain these type of files to a new folder on your NAS / local hard drive.
Once you have copied the files, then set the disk use checkbox to blank. You should now be able to import these folders into iTunes - you may get some duplication, but this can be sorted in iTunes.

Good Luck ! :)
