I'm about to flatten a disc and reinstall Windows.

If I copy the Itunes tracks to an external drive and then back again will they still work or are they protected in some way?

it is worth trying send them to external hard drive instead of copy paste i done it a year ago with 7 day loan film wanted to watch before i buy i sent it to a 2nd hard drive no problem most copyright won't let you copy but will let you move

most of the tracks from iTunes are nowadays DRM free (ie no copy protection). Protected files are .m4p and DRM free are .m4a. there's also your normal mp3 files if you ripped tunes yourself and not have the convert option set in iTunes preferences.

Even the copyrighted files can be moved back and forth as many times as you like, if you use the same ID that you used when you bought the tunes.

If you copy copy protected tracks from someone else and try to play them in your iTunes, you'll get a prompt with your friends' email asking for the password. if you login using your friend's credentials, then you won't be able to access your purchased tracks.

if you want to convert copy protected tracks to non copy protected ones, just burn an audio CD with those tracks and then rip the tracks from the CD.

As I know, iTunes media files have drm protection which prevent users playing these files to other "non-authorized" computers/devices/players, so if you need to load itunes content to an external drive, you may remove iTunes DRM first:)

It's as simple as this....

Find your iTunes folder and drag it to your separate hard drive.

Reinstall Windows on you main PC.

Once you've reinstalled iTunes on your PC, drag the iTunes folder that you have on your hard drive back to your PC.

When you start iTunes on your PC, hold down the ctrl key as it starts. When asked which iTunes library to want to use, select the iTunes folder you recently moved from your hard drive to your PC.

As you are re-installing, I strongly suggest you set up your Docs folder (or user folder for Vista) on a separate drive (partition). direct Itunes/Photoshop etc to the data drive as well.

Lot less hassle and easy to keep OS and Data backed up appropriately - i.e. regular image for OS and regular/incremental file backup for docs and music etc...
